16/09/2024|SB Staff|Betting Guides & Terminology

When it comes to punting, many colourful and sometimes confusing terms constantly get thrown around.

Whether you're down at the pub, hanging out with mates, or next to the office water cooler, you may have heard somebody talking about a recent wager they’ve made, yet have no idea what they’re talking about.

That’s because they’re probably well acquainted with the wonderful world of punting lingo. As you all know, one of the great joys of being Australian is having a slang term for just about everything. Well, having a punt is no different.

There are many weird, wonderful and downright hilarious punting phrases that, to the uninitiated, can come across as pure gibberish.

That’s why we’ve created this betting terminology & punting lingo guide to help newcomers get up to speed with the most popular betting phrases.

So let’s get stuck into the betting terminology and come out the other side with a better understanding of these topics.

Big Bickies

Ever been convinced that one of your bets was a sure thing? If so, you probably loaded in some big bickies on it.

“Big Bickies” simply means “betting a large amount of money.”

Cheeky Pineapple

“Just slap a Cheeky Pineapple on her, mate.” You’ve probably heard someone say that peripherally at one point or another.

A cheeky pineapple is simply $50 or, more specifically, a $50 note. So named due to the colour of the note reflecting that of a pineapple.

Fresh Lobster

Like the Cheeky Pineapple, a Fresh Lobster also denotes a form of currency.

Once again named for its colour, a Fresh Lobster is another name for a $20 note.

Daily Double

No, this is not a Jeopardy reference; a Daily Double is when someone, preferably yourself, picks the winner in two different races.

Chunky Gorilla

What sounds like a strange type of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream actually means to bet $1000.

Sly Monkey

For those who don’t want to go the full Chunky Gorilla, there is the leaner option of a Sly Monkey.

Half as much, a Sly Monkey is a wager of $500.

Foot on the till

Derived from the term of having one’s “fingers in the till”, which means to steal from an employer, “Foot on the Till” is a clear favourite, or an absolute steal if you will.

Salute the Judge

This piece of punting lingo refers to the winning horse of a race. They get the honour of saluting the judge as they are first past the post.

A Spider

Not for the faint of heart. A Spider is an eight-legged Multi - arachnophobes steer clear.

Quinella

What is the meaning behind a quinella. Such a unique sounding word must have a rather deep and convoluded explanation right? Well not quite, the Quinella is unique to horse racing and features when a punter must select the first and second place finishers without a specific order, thus creating a quinella. Read more in our ‘What is a Quinella’ guide.

Quaddie

So what is a quaddie? A quaddie bet is a highly specialised form of horse racing meulti. Requiring you to select the winnin ghorse in four separate races at the same track on the same day. Luckily the ‘What is a Quaddie?’ guide can help you make light work of it!

Treble Bet

The treble bet is once again a form of multi, requiring three different selections from different events to be rolled into the same multi. Of course these all need to be successful as individual legs to make the treble successful but you get the picture.

Heavy Track

Once again we have a horse racing term featuring here. They really know how to pick them don’t they!

A heavy track in horse racing is a doft track often filled with water, causing the horses to slightly sink, resulting in rough, heavy going. Thus a heavy track is a rather suitable name.

Bookie

One of the more common terms, the bookie, also known as book maker has been around for years and is another term for someone facilitating your bets, helping smooth over your punter experience.

Buck

Last but not least, a Buck is simply $100. So next time your mate tells you to “chuck a buck on it”, make sure they know what they mean.
