How To Bet On NBA Games
Every market explained, from the head-to-head and line to player props, Same Game Multis and futures, plus the season dates and Australian tip-off times that shape them.
Betting on the NBA comes down to three steps: pick a game (or a season-long market), choose a bet type such as the head-to-head, the line or a player prop, then set your stake and confirm.
The rest is knowing what each market actually asks you to predict, and that's what this page covers.
The NBA suits Australian punters better than almost any overseas league. Games land in our mornings and early afternoons, there are multiple games most days from late October to April, and the market list on a single fixture runs deep.
It also moves fast. Injury news, rest days and back-to-backs can flip a line within an hour, so the punters who do well tend to be the ones who understand why a price looks the way it does.
How the NBA Season Works for Punters
The NBA calendar has five distinct phases, and each one opens up different markets. The 2026-27 season tips off on Tuesday 20 October (US time), with the New York Knicks raising their 2025-26 championship banner after beating the San Antonio Spurs in the Finals.
NBA Regular Season Betting
Thirty teams split into two conferences, East and West, and each team plays 82 regular-season games. The schedule runs until Sunday 11 April 2027 (US time).
Standings are decided by win-loss record. There's no points table like the AFL or A-League; a team that goes 55-27 sits above a team that goes 50-32, full stop. Tiebreakers kick in when records are level.
That record matters because only the top six in each conference qualify for the playoffs directly. Teams finishing seventh to tenth go into the Play-In Tournament, which settles the last two playoff spots in each conference.

NBA Cup Betting
The NBA Cup is an in-season tournament played inside the regular season. All 30 teams are split into six groups of five, and each team plays its four group opponents once between 30 October and 27 November (US time).
The six group winners plus one wildcard from each conference reach the knockout rounds.
This year's format has changed. The quarterfinals (4 and 5 December) and semifinals (8 and 9 December) are played at the higher seed's home court, and the championship game is on 11 December at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
That's Saturday 12 December in Australia.
Group and knockout games count towards the regular-season record. The championship game does not.
That's a handy detail for punters, because the final is the one Cup game that does nothing for a team's playoff seeding, while the prize money makes it far from a dead rubber.

NBA All-Star Weekend Betting
All-Star Weekend runs from 19 to 21 February 2027 in Phoenix. It's a set of one-off markets on the All-Star Game itself, the Slam Dunk Contest and the Three-Point Contest.

NBA Playoffs Betting
The playoffs start in April, straight after the Play-In. Sixteen teams play best-of-seven series, with the winners of the East and West conference finals meeting in the NBA Finals for the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy.
Playoff basketball is a different game. Rotations shorten, stars play heavier minutes, defences tighten and every team has a full game plan for one opponent.

NBA Betting Markets Explained

One rule to know first: most NBA game markets include overtime unless the market says otherwise.
A head-to-head bet on a game that goes to overtime is settled on the final result after the extra period. Our NBA overtime rules explained page covers how the extra five minutes work.
Head-to-Head (Match Betting)
The simplest bet in basketball. You pick which team wins the game, and there's no draw option because the game continues into overtime until someone wins. Americans call this the moneyline.
The catch is price. When a contender hosts a rebuilding team, the favourite's head-to-head price is often too short to be appealing as a single, which is why so many punters move to the line.
Line Betting (Handicap)
Line betting is the most popular NBA bet type, and it's the one that makes lopsided games interesting. The bookie gives the underdog a head start of a set number of points, and you bet on which team wins once that start is applied.
Say Chicago are +7.5 against a stronger side. Backing the Bulls wins if they win outright or lose by seven or fewer. Backing the favourite at -7.5 wins only if they win by eight or more.

Alternate Lines
Alternate lines let you choose a different handicap from the main one. Take the favourite at a bigger line (say -12.5) and the price gets longer; give the underdog more points (say +14.5) and the price gets shorter.
They're popular in multis and SGMs, where punters adjust a leg to match how they expect the game to play out rather than taking the standard line.
Total Points (Over/Under)
You bet on whether the combined score of both teams goes over or under a number set by the bookie. NBA totals are high because modern teams shoot so many threes and play at a fast pace.
Pace is the big driver. Two up-tempo teams who don't defend well push totals up; two slow, half-court defensive teams pull them down. Team totals work the same way for one side only.
Quarter and Half Markets
Almost every main market is also offered for each half and each quarter: head-to-head, line and total points for the first quarter, first half, and so on.
These suit punters who have a view on how a game starts rather than how it finishes. Starters play most of the first quarter, so first-quarter markets lean on the starting five; benches and coaching decisions shape the second and fourth.
Quarter markets are settled on that quarter's score only, and some quarter head-to-head markets include a draw option, so check the market rules before you get on.
Big Win Little Win
A winning margin market with a twist. You pick a team and whether they win by a small margin (for example, 1 to 10 points) or a big margin (11 or more).
It sits between the head-to-head and the line: more reward than simply picking the winner, without having to pin down an exact margin. Standard winning margin bands (1 to 5, 6 to 10 and so on) are also available.
First Basket
You pick which player scores the first basket of the game. There are also team versions (first team to score) and race markets (first team to reach 10 or 20 points).
It's a high-variance market: the tip-off winner gets the first possession, and the team's first play is usually designed for one of a few players.
Player Props and the Player Hub
Player props are bets on individual stats rather than the result.
The most common:
- Points, rebounds and assists (over a set line or a "20+ points" style milestone)
- Combined stats such as points plus rebounds plus assists
- Three-pointers made
- Steals and blocks
- Double-doubles and triple-doubles
- Top points scorer in the game

A player's averages mean little if he's coming back from injury on a minutes limit or if the game is likely to be a blowout and starters sit the fourth quarter.
Same Game Multi (SGM)
An SGM combines several selections from the one game into a single bet. Every leg has to win, and the price grows with each one you add.
A typical Aussie-flavoured SGM might combine Josh Giddey 20+ points, 8+ rebounds and 6+ assists for the Bulls, or Dyson Daniels to record multiple steals for the Hawks alongside a team result.

Futures Markets
Futures are season-long bets settled at the end of a competition.
The main ones:
- NBA Championship winner
- Eastern and Western Conference winners
- Division winners
- NBA Cup winner
- Regular season win totals (over or under a number of wins for a team)
- Making or missing the playoffs

NBA Player Awards
Award markets run all season on the MVP, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Most Improved Player, Sixth Man of the Year and Coach of the Year.
One rule changes how these markets behave: players generally need to appear in at least 65 games to be eligible for most major awards.

Live Betting
Prices on NBA games keep moving once the ball is tipped, and big runs are common in basketball. Australian law matters here, though.

How Back-to-Backs, Rest and Injuries Move NBA Markets
NBA prices react to availability more than almost any other sport. A single star missing can shift a line by several points, and the information arrives late.
Back-to-backs. Teams regularly play on consecutive nights, often with travel in between. The second night is where tired legs, shorter rotations and rested starters show up.
Bookies factor this in, so a team on the second night of a back-to-back away from home will usually carry a less generous line than its season form suggests.
Rest and load management. Teams manage the minutes of their stars across 82 games, and the league has tightened its rules on resting healthy players in nationally televised games.
Rest decisions still happen, especially late in the season once seeding is locked.
Injury reports. Teams file official injury reports before every game, listing players as out, doubtful, questionable or probable.
Markets move the moment a status changes. Because most games tip off in the Australian morning, the final updates often land very early here, so check the latest news before you lock in a bet placed the night before.
Late-season motivation. In the final weeks, some teams are chasing a top-six spot while others are locked into their seed or out of contention.
A team with nothing to play for may rest its starters entirely, which affects the line, totals and every player prop.
None of this guarantees a result. It explains why a price looks the way it does, which is the first step to forming your own view.
Australian Time Zones and Where to Watch
NBA games are played across four US time zones, but for Australians the pattern is reliable: most games tip off between the early morning and early afternoon on the east coast.
A standard 7pm Eastern tip is 10am AEDT in October and 11am AEDT from early November, once US daylight saving ends. The gap shifts again in March and April as both countries change their clocks.
Queensland doesn't use daylight saving, so Brisbane is an hour behind Sydney and Melbourne through summer. Perth is three hours behind AEDT.
