Olympic Surfing 2024 Tips & Predictions

02/08/2024|SB Staff|Olympics Tips & Predictions

It’s surfs up once again at the Olympic Games, with Paris following Tokyo’s lead and including Surfing as an Olympic sport for 2024.

This is only the second time in history that Surfing has been included at the Olympics, but it appears to be here to stay from now on.

Its inclusion this year means it gets to be hosted at the idyllic Teahupo'o in French Polynesia.

So far it is proving to be an excellent location for this year's Olympic Surfing, as it serves as one of the most technical and beautiful tubing waves in the world

Forecasts have indicated that the conditions in Teahupo'o should be fun, but on the smaller side. Nothing close to the size, power this wave has the capabilities to get to under the correct conditions.

Regardless of the conditions, we’ve already seen some breathtaking surfing from the world's best at these Olympics, with the best yet to come as we head towards the medal rounds.

For the recaps of the early rounds as well as expert tips and predictions as to who could possibly take out gold in both the men’s and women’s categories, check out our Olympic Surfing tips and predictions below.

Olympic Surfing 2024 Men’s Tips and Predictions

So far at these Olympics we’ve seen a strong showing in the surfing from Aussie hopeful Ethan Ewing, who took out his round 1 heat.

He wasn’t the only strong performer in round 1, with medal favourites Medina, Colapinto and John John Florence, all impressing.

Round 2 saw more of the same, with all favourites through to round 3. As we arrive near the pointy end of the competition, let’s take a look who is going for gold in the men’s Olympic surfing bracket.

Kauli Vaast

First up is local legend Kauli Vaast. The Tahitian looked strong in his heat win over seasoned WSL vet McGillivray.

He is regarded as one of the best up and coming surfers at the moment and extremely experienced for his age at this wave - considering he's grown up with it on his doorstep.

Vaast will no doubt be ready to compete with the big dogs as we glide towards gold.

Jack Robinson

Our Aussie boy Jack is widely regarded as one of the top three best tube riders on the men's tour and is a strong favourite on this wave.

However, he sustained a solid cut to his foot practicing out here a few days ago, which could hurt his chances, so watch this space.

John John Florence

Currently the number one ranked surfer on the planet John has looked every bit of the JJF of old over the last few months and is a strong favourite to take out Olympic gold.

He possesses some of the best tube riding abilities in the history of the sport and is made for the wave at this particular location.

Gabriel Medina

Rounding out our picks for the blokes, is another legend of the sport – Gabriel Medina.

He has had excellent historical performances at this wave, and we expect him to feature heavily in the medal race here.

Despite currently having a relatively lacklustre WSL season, expect him to be very fired up here and ready to make a statement with Olympic gold on the line.

Gold medal prediction: Jack Robinson.

Olympic Surfing 2024 Women’s Tips and Predictions

Now onto the women’s bracket and it’s American Caroline Marks making waves early on in Teahupo'o. She has looked extremely impressive early, even combo-ing the other competitors in her heat.

Joining Marks in catching the eye is also local hero Vahine Fierro, consistent performers Hennesey, Simmers and Carissa and our own Tyler Wright.

Wright cruised through the opening round and will be hoping to emulate her brother Owen, who took home bronze in the Surfing at Tokyo.

The only drawback for Australia’s medal hopes is that our young-star Molly Picklum was unfortunately knocked out by crafty tour vet Johanne Defay and won’t be able to make the podium. Here are some candidates who can though.

Caroline Marks

Marks is one of the in-form surfers of the year and looking extremely dialled in after a strong opening heat. No doubt she’ll be challenging for a place on the podium.

Vahine Fierro

Much like Vaast in the men’s bracket, Vahine is a young local who's made a name for herself already in waves of this consequence; so expect her to feature when it matters.

Carissa Moore

One of the all-time greats, Moore may have decided to take the year off the tour, however she hasn't missed a beat in her opening heat. Class is permanent as they say, so is a gold medal.

Caitlin Simmers

The young American prodigy looks poised for a strong medal run, having proven herself super strong in heavy, tubing waves after winning the Pipe tour stop to start this season.

Such has been her form in conditions such as this, she is our pick for gold at this year’s women’s Olympic Surfing.

Gold medal prediction: Caitlin Simmers.
