Men’s Olympic Basketball Tips & Predictions 2024

25/07/2024|SB Staff|Olympics Tips & Predictions

The 2024 Paris Olympics kicks off later this month and the hype across all disciplines is starting to reach fever pitch.

As always, one of the most anticipated events, both Down Under and abroad, will be the Olympic basketball.

Now that the draw and groups for the Men’s 2024 Olympic basketball have been officially set, it’s time to run the rule across each group, who’s in line for a podium finish and of course, how our Boomers will get on.

Can Australia escape the group of death and make a run for only their second-ever Olympic medal for Basketball?

What about the absolutely stacked team the USA have unveiled? Can they make it five straight gold medals? Or will it be a case of too many cooks in the kitchen?

For the latest Olympic Men’s basketball analysis, odds, and more, check out our Men’s Olympic Basketball 2024 tips and predictions below.

Men’s Olympic Basketball Group Predictions

The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals, where they will be joined by the two best third placed teams. This means eight of the 12 teams spread across the three groups will advance. But who will they be?

Group A Predictions

Australia, Canada, Spain, Greece

The undisputed group of death, every single one of these nations have something going for them.

Greece have Giannis, the Spanish League is essentially the second-best professional basketball league on the planet and Canada are bristling with top NBA talent and favourites to top the group. So where does that leave Australia?

Right where we want to be, backs against the way, ready to harness that Aussie spirit.

The goat, Patty Mills is going again, as is Ingles and they’re bringing the next gen with them as Giddey, Landale and Green are on the plane to Paris too. Although, surprisingly, athletic on-ball defender Matisse Thybulle is not, despite his NBA pedigree.

While Canada, led by their two world class guards Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jamal Murray, should top Group A, you bet we’re backing the Boomers to defy the odds and make it out alongside them.

Prediction: Canada (winner), Australia (runners up).

Group B Predictions

France, Germany, Japan, Brazil

Group B is headlined by two European powerhouses Germany and France. The Germans are the reigning World Champions and France are being considered as legitimate title contenders, thanks largely to the fact they will have the services of defensive duo Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gorbet at their disposal.

Wemby is the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year and Gobert the Defensive Player of the Year. They will make the French defence impregnable at times.

Their resolve at the back of the court should be enough to carry them to the top of Group B and potentially to a medal.

Prediction: France (winner), Germany (runners up).

Group C Predictions

Serbia, South Sudan, Puerto Rico, USA

Group C will be a matter of who comes second, because unless a string of some of the most miraculous upsets in basketball history transpire, team USA will top this collective with ease.

The Stars and Stripes have unveiled one of the most stacked teams in Olympic history, with a roster that reads more like a Hall of Fame ballot than a team sheet.

LeBron James, Jayson Tatum, Kawhi Leonard, Jrue Holiday, Anthony Edwards, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Haliburton, Kevin Durant, Bam Adebayo, Devin Booker, Anthony Davis and Stephen Curry.

Are you kidding? Somehow, we don’t see South Sudan or Puerto Rico troubling this squad too much.

Of the three remaining, it’s Serbia who appear to have the most pedigree under the hoop, mainly thanks to the exploits of current NBA MVP Nikola Jokic.

He will have backup from fellow NBA players Bogdan Bogdanovic and Vasilije Micic, meaning Serbia should have more than enough quality to progress ahead of Puerto Rico and South Sudan.

Prediction: USA (winner), Serbia (runners up).

Men’s Olympic Basketball Medal Predictions

Bronze Medal Prediction

Dubbed the French Twin Towers, Wemby and Gobert should make France the best defensive team at the 2024 Olympics.

They’ll also have home ground advantage, seeing as this edition of the Olympics is in Paris.

They say defence wins titles and while it might not do that, it certainly can get France on the podium.

Prediction: France.

Silver Medal Prediction

There’s no two ways about it, this generation of the Canadian national team is completely stacked.

The thought of Jamal Murray and SGA lining up together should be enough to strike fear into the defence of any nation.

With plenty of other NBA talent joining them in Paris, Canada most probably have what it takes to make the gold medal match.

Prediction: Canada.

Gold Medal Prediction

If Canada does make it to the gold medal match, chances are they will be squaring off against the USA.

That would be some match, considering the talent of both nations as well as their proximity geographically. However, is anyone brave enough to bet against this loaded USA side?

They’ve won the last four Men’s Basketball Olympic gold medals and have assembled one of their strongest teams in years for Paris 2024.

At the time of writing the are paying a staggering 1.19* to finish on top of the podium, with the next favourites (Canada), paying 11.50*.

It would be considered an all-time choke if they don’t win gold and frankly, we can’t see it happening.

*Odds are subject to change.

Prediction: USA.

Men’s Olympic Basketball Dates, Details and How to Watch in Australia

Dates: Saturday, July 27 – Saturday, August 10, 2024.

Location: Paris, France.

Number of teams: 12.

How to watch: Free-to-air TV and Stan Sport.

Olympics 2024 Men’s Basketball Odds
