Men’s Olympic Basketball – Australia vs Canada Tips & Predictions
30/07/2024|SB Staff|Olympics Tips & Predictions

After seeing off the Spanish in their Group A opener at the 2024 Olympics, the Boomers now have to face the might of Canada in the headline match of the so called “Group of Death.”

Recent results for both sides indicate this is a game not to be missed, with the Boomers and their Canadian counterparts turning in impressive performances in their Olympic openers.

There are a number of fascinating personnel matchups set to take place here in what should be a high-tempo, high scoring and physical contest.

Can the Boomers contain Canada’s world class attacking weapons Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jamal Murray?

Or will it be a case of fighting fire with fire and hoping the likes of Mills, Giddey and the rest can match them in the scoring column. On paper it looks unlikely, but we’ve been proven wrong by this Boomers side before.

Let’s take a closer look at how this one might play out. For the latest Aussie team news, odds, betting tips and more, check out our Australia vs Canada Men’s Olympics tips and predictions below.

Boomers Predicted Team

It should be a case of “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” here for Boomer’s head coach Brian Goorjian and we anticipate he will name the same side that started in the victory over Spain.

The only big news on the lineup front is the rumours that Dante Exum may be declared fit to play after missing Australia’s opener against Spain with a dislocated finger.

His energy off the bench could be paramount to a Green and Gold upset, however, there are still doubts whether he will feature here or not.

Elsewhere, the inclusion of Matisse Thybulle to guard SGA would be pretty handy right about now, but for reasons still unknown to everyone, someone forgot to book him a plane ticket to Paris.

Australia will have to try and contain the OKC livewire another way, with the matchup between him and former Thunder teammate Josh Giddey one that will be essential to the outcome of this game.

All that being said, we expect minimal to zero changes to the starting lineup that took care of Spain a few days ago. Here’s how we predict Australia will line up against Canada.

Australia predicted team: PG – Patty Mills, SG – Josh Giddey, SF – Dyson Daniels, PF – Nick Kay, C – Jock Landale.

Australia vs Canada Betting Tips and Predictions

Head-to-Head (H2H)

There will be plenty of optimism here for an Australia standpoint after a solid first hit out against Spain.

However, it’s important to manage expectations and also to remember Canada are one of the medal favourites.

After a 21-7-5 game against Greece, which included a clutch dagger, it has become apparent you can’t really stop Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, just try and limit the damage.

This task will fall on Dyson Daniels and Josh Green. On the Canadian side of things Dort and Brooks will be tasked with harassing Australia’s attacking weapons.

In what will be a physical match up, second chance scoring will play a big part, as will Jock Landale, who will try and keep the Canadian rebounders in check. If he can do this successfully, Australia actually have a chance here.

All in all, Canada simply have too many points on paper and as the odds suggest, should be able to get home in this one.

Betting tip: Canada by 8 points.

Most Points

There is a clear candidate here and that of course is Oklahoma Thunder megastar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

We’ve already waxed poetic about the 26-year-old Canadian guard, but with good reason.

He’s coming off a career best season with the Thunder, one that was nearly MVP worthy.

His backcourt battle with former teammate Josh Giddey will be “grab the popcorn” level entertainment, but we are tipping the seemingly free scoring SGA to get the best of proceedings as well as topping the points column in this game.

Betting tip: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander most points.

Most Assists

Speaking of Giddey, he’s always a fairly reliable tip when it comes to assists. He topped this metric with eight against Spain and we’re backing him to do so again here.

Former teammate SGA might have other ideas however, and after he collected seven assists to go with his 21 points against Greece is another one to consider for this market.

Betting tip: Josh Giddey most assists.

Total Points – Over/Under

There’s simply too much attacking talent spread across the court to tip the under here.

This could very quickly descend into an old fashion shootout, particularly with renowned three-point shooter Patty Mills and Jamal Murray on either end of the court.

Betting tip: Over total match points.
