Cronulla Sharks vs Wests Tigers Prediction – Round 9 2026

01/05/2026|SB Staff|NRL Expert Predictions & Tips

The Sharks host the Wests Tigers in a match that is more than just your typical mid-season fixture.

Desperate to bounce back after being outpointed 46-34 by the Cowboys last week in a performance that exposed their defensive weaknesses, while the Tigers are currently having their best-ever start to an NRL season.

Cronulla’s formidable home record looms as a significant factor, although Benji’s side have proven they are no longer the pushovers of seasons past.

Add in a blockbuster off-field story surrounding the official announcement that Tigers five-eighth Jarome Luai has signed with the PNG Chiefs from the 2028 season and beyond. You’ve got to love the team-first mentality there!

Cronulla Sharks vs Wests Tigers Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

The biggest news surrounding the Tigers this week has nothing to do with their on-field preparations, with Jarome Luai confirmed as the inaugural signing for the PNG Chiefs, inking a two-year deal starting in 2028 with an option for a third season, though he remains committed to the Tigers until the end of the 2027 season.

On the team front, the Tigers have been hit with several key absences, with Api Koroisau serving a suspension, bringing Tristan Hope into the hooker role, while Jahream Bula’s shoulder injury sees Sunia Turava shift to fullback and Jeral Skelton come in on the wing, and Kai Pearce-Paul also missing through HIA protocols.

The Sharks welcome back co-captain Cameron McInnes into the starting after returning from an ACL injury last week, his second appearance since Round 24 of last season.

We expect an upset over the Tigers, with significant news coming out of Tigers camp and the Sharks wanting to prove they can adjust their game to compete with the best.

Betting tip: Cronulla Sharks.

First Try Scorer Prediction

Luke Laulilii has the speed and agility to slip past the Sharks struggling defence and with a great halves combination between Luai and Doueihi, it should open up points on their edge.

Each of Cronulla's last four matches have gone over the total match points line.

Betting tip: Over (52.5) total match points.
