Newcastle Knights vs South Sydney Rabbitohs Prediction – Round 9 2026

01/05/2026|SB Staff|NRL Expert Predictions & Tips

The Knights are under pressure after having back-to-back games with awful defence.

South Sydney are riding a wave of momentum following their stunning 48-6 win over the Storm last week, with their attack firing on all cylinders.

Newcastle have a three game losing streak meanwhile the Rabbitohs are boasting some of the most lethal attacking weapons in the competition.

This Sunday’s clash is set to deliver plenty of fireworks.

Newcastle Knights vs South Sydney Rabbitohs Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

The Knights receive a massive selection boost ahead of this clash, with Kalyn Ponga returning from a hamstring injury for his first appearance since Round 2, while Bradman Best and Greg Marzhew are also back, giving Newcastle close to their strongest available line-up.

Ponga’s return reshuffles the halves, with Fletcher Sharpe shifting to five-eighth and Sandon Smith dropping to the interchange.

The Rabbitohs are not without their own injury woes, with Brandon Smith who came off early against the Storm with a calf complaint dropping to the reserves, while Jamie Humphreys has been named to start in the halves despite leaving the game with a rib issue. We expect the Rabbitohs to win this game and the Knights have been shockingly bad at home, having lost eight of their last nine matches at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Betting tip: South Sydney Rabbitohs.

First Try Scorer Prediction

The Knights could throw off the Rabbitohs start to the game, and with Kalyn Ponga back, it could open up space for the Knights to find Dominic Young to score first.

Betting tip: Dominic Young.

Over/Under Prediction

Five of Newcastle's last six home matches have gone over the total match points line.

Betting tip: Over (52.5) total match points.

Line Prediction

Newcastle has failed to cover the line in nine of its last 10 matches against opponents that were ranked higher on the ladder.

Betting tip: Rabbitohs (-1.5) line.
