NRL round 19 has a tough act to follow. Last week saw not one, but two golden point games, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves become the most-capped Sydney Roosters’ player of all-time and some truly stunning four-pointers.

It also signaled the start of Sportsbet’s Try July for 2024, with plenty of players pulling out their best try celebrations to raise money for Toni Hunt and the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation.

No doubt we’re set to see many more memorable celebrations in round 19, as we bear witness to several crucial matches in the race for the top eight.

With so much to look forward to, no more wasting time, let’s dive in!

The Dolphins vs South Sydney Rabbitohs Prediction

Thursday. July 11, 7:50pm AEST – Dolphins Stadium

Kicking off NRL round 19 is this clash between the Dolphins and the red-hot Rabbitohs.

Their win over Parramatta last week made it five on the spin for the Redfern club, as their transformation from wooden spoon contenders to top eight hopefuls continues to gather steam.

The win came at a cost however, with main man Latrell Mitchell picking up a foot injury that will see him sidelined for at least a month.

He was set to miss this game anyway due to Origin, and he’s not the only one with their skipper Cameron Murray in camp for NSW.

Two Dolphins have also earned Origin call ups, with the Hammer and Felise Kaufusi being selected for QLD, but their influence pales in comparison to that of the Rabbitohs absentees.

With a less-decimated squad, home ground advantage and incoming Bunnies coach, the great Wayne Bennett, still in their box for the time being, we’re tipping the Phins to be the ones to end the Rabbits’ run.

Head-to-head prediction: The Dolphins.

Betting tip: Herbie Farnworth first try scorer.

Cronulla Sharks vs Wests Tigers Prediction

Friday, July 12, 8:00pm AEST – Shark Park

Cronulla’s stocks took another hit last week as they went down to the Titans, while the Tigers recorded yet another loss in season 2024.

They were brave in defeat however, admirably playing their part in a 40-28 shootout with ladder leaders the Melbourne Storm.

Cronulla get a chance to set things right in front of their own this week, as they return to Shark Park where they are always tough to beat.

For those seeking value, tipping the Tigers really isn’t the worst play, but we just can’t do it. Sharks to sneak home here.

Sugar says: Listening to the post match press conference, a huge focus for Fitzgibbon is fixing up their tardy starts. Think they can explode out of the barriers here and lead all the way.

Head-to-head prediction: Cronulla Sharks.

Sugar's tip: SGM - Sharks to score first, lead at H/T & win.

Gold Coast Titans vs Parramatta Eels Prediction

Saturday, July 13, 5:30pm AEST – Robina Stadium

Round 19 plays host to this crucial match in the race for the 2024 wooden spoon. The Eels are equal last, with a measly points difference of nine keeping them off the foot of the ladder above the Tigers.

The Titans have begun to pull away from Parra and Wests, but the Eels will want to drag them back down towards the mire.

They’ll also want to impress incoming head coach Jason Ryles who has signed on to be the Eels new mentor for 2025 and beyond.

However, after this one, he may just realise the size of the task ahead of him. The Eels with no Mitchell Moses? Steer clear.

Sugar says: The last 16 occasions where a team who have been out of contention has had to travel, all 16 have been losses. The losses were by an average of 25 points. Holiday makers!

Head-to-head prediction: Gold Coast Titans.

Betting tip: Titans Big Win, Little Win 13+

Brisbane Broncos vs St George Illawarra Dragons Prediction

Saturday, July 13, 7:35pm AEST – Suncorp Stadium

Just like that, last year’s grand finalists Brisbane are in very real danger of missing the eight if they don’t get their act together fast.

It’ll be a rag tag team facing the Dragons at Suncorp thanks to camp for Origin III getting underway, but the Dragons will be missing troops too, namely main men Ben Hunt and Zac Lomax.

The Broncos know they need wins sooner rather than later and even though they pushed Penrith all the way last week, can they get it done here.

Sugar says: This feels like an identical scenario to when the Dragons went to Penrith in Origin period and came away with a big win. Ironically that win was also straight after getting beaten by 30 odd. Feels like a flip of the coin game and we are getting $2.68 (at the time of writing).

Head-to-head prediction: St George Illawarra Dragons.

Sugar's tip: Dragons H2H.

Manly Sea Eagles vs Newcastle Knights Prediction

Sunday, July 14, 4:05pm AEST – Brookvale Oval

It’ll be the Sea Eagles and the Knights wrapping up NRL round 19, when the two sides meet at Brookvale Oval on Sunday afternoon.

This one shapes as a battle of the backups, with multiple strike weapons for each side away on Origin duty.

Returning fullbacks and Dally M winners Tom Trbojevic and Kalyn Ponga, both made it through their first game back from extended layoffs last week, but only Ponga was jettisoned straight into the Origin frame.

NSW’s loss could be Manly’s gain, with Turbo Tom’s inclusion enough to swing this one in the Sea Eagles favour.

Head-to-head prediction: Manly Sea Eagles.

Betting tip: Tom Trbojevic anytime try scorer.

Canterbury Bulldogs, North Queensland Cowboys, Penrith Panthers, Canberra Raiders, Sydney Roosters, Melbourne Storm, New Zealand Warriors – BYE

Half the competition gets a week off thanks to State of Origin Game III being on the horizon, in what is the last major bye round of the 2024 season.
