Top 10 Youngest NRL Players Ever

These days, most NRL players are at least 18 before they get a sniff of first grade, but it wasn't always that way.

Over more than a century of premiership footy, a handful of teenagers have been thrown into the deep end against grown men, some of them still in their school years.

Some went on to become legends of the game. Others found out the hard way just how brutal first grade can be.

Ranked by age on debut day and based on players with verified birth and debut dates, this is as young as they come.

It’s time to count down the top 10 youngest NRL players ever, culminating in the revelation of just who exactly is the youngest player in NRL history.

Note this list is inclusive of players from across the NSWRFL, ARL and NRL eras.

Top 10 Youngest Players in NRL History

10. Keith Middleton – 17 years, 34 days (North Sydney, 1948)

Kicking off the list of the youngest NRL players ever is Keith Middleton, who came to North Sydney from Bermagui as a teenager in 1948.

He made his first-grade debut in Round 1 that year against St George at North Sydney Oval, just a month after his 17th birthday.

It didn't take him long to find his feet either. By 1950 he had been picked for New South Wales and for Australia in the Ashes series.

9. Nathan Barnes – 17 years, 32 days (Penrith, 1992)

Just two days younger on debut day was Penrith's Nathan Barnes.

Barnes debuted in Round 21 of 1992 against Cronulla, barely a month after turning 17.

He spent two seasons at the foot of the mountains before heading north to Newcastle.

8. Paul Mellor – 16 years, 313 days (South Sydney, 1991)

From here on out, it's 16-year-olds only. Paul Mellor is the youngest player ever to run out for the Rabbitohs, debuting off the bench against the Gold Coast in Round 14 of 1991.

Souths won 34-18, but Mellor had to wait until 1992 for his second taste of first grade.

7. Adam Ritson – 16 years, 303 days (Cronulla, 1993)

When Arthur Beetson picked schoolboy Adam Ritson for Cronulla in 1993, plenty of people thought the Sharks coach had lost the plot.

Ritson debuted in Round 10 against Illawarra in Wollongong, and he remains Cronulla's youngest first-grader.

Sadly, his career was cut short. After a heavy knock in 1996, a scan found a life-threatening brain cyst, and he never played again.

6. Andrew Dunemann – 16 years, 299 days (Gold Coast Seagulls, 1993)

1993 was clearly a big year for teenagers in Rugby League.

Just eight weeks after Ritson's debut, Andrew Dunemann ran out for the Gold Coast Seagulls against North Sydney in Round 18.

Dunemann made a long career of it, too. He later crossed to England and was part of the Leeds side that beat the Bulldogs in the 2005 World Club Challenge.

5. Charlie Montgomery – 16 years, 292 days (St George, 1941)

Charlie Montgomery debuted for St George in Round 1 of 1941 against Newtown at the SCG.

Talk about good timing. That season ended with the Dragons winning their first-ever premiership, with the teenage prop in the front row.

4. Frank Burge – 16 years, 258 days (Glebe, 1911)

One of the games original try scoring greats, Frank Burge debuted for Glebe against Western Suburbs on 29 April 1911, still only 16.

Selectors reckoned he was too young for the 1911-12 Kangaroo tour. Fair enough, but he made up for lost time.

Burge scored 146 first-grade tries for Glebe, a record for a forward that stood until Steve Menzies broke it in 2004.

3. Jordan Rankin – 16 years, 238 days (Gold Coast Titans, 2008)

The only NRL-era player on this list is Jordan Rankin. Rankin came off the bench for the Titans against Newcastle in Round 22 of 2008, making him the youngest player to debut in the NRL era.

His time on the Gold Coast didn't go to plan, with just 17 first-grade games in six years.

He later rebuilt his career in England with Hull FC before returning home to play for the Wests Tigers.

2. Jack Arnold – 16 years, 208 days (Western Suburbs, 1936)

Jack Arnold debuted for Western Suburbs against Balmain at Leichhardt Oval in Round 3 of 1936.

He remains the youngest player in Wests' history.

After just one season at Wests, Arnold moved to Eastern Suburbs in 1938 and stayed there for more than a decade.

1. Ray Stehr – 16 years, 86 days (Eastern Suburbs, 1929)

Standing alone at the top is Eastern Suburbs great Ray Stehr.

Stehr made his first-grade debut against University at the Sydney Sports Ground on 20 April 1929, less than three months after his 16th birthday.

Plenty of kids his age were still worrying about their homework. Stehr was packing scrums.

He went on to win premierships with Easts in 1935, 1936, 1937 and 1940, played 11 Tests for Australia and is in the NRL Hall of Fame.

Can a 16-Year-Old Still Play in the NRL?

Don't expect anyone to knock Stehr off top spot any time soon. Under current NRL rules, players now have to be 18 to play first grade.

The only way around it is an exemption from the ARL Commission. Joseph Suaalii got one in March 2021 and debuted for the Roosters that May at 17 years and 294 days.

He was the first under-18 debutant since Jason Taumalolo in 2010. Rankin's debut, for the record, came before the age rule existed.

Who Is the Youngest Player in the NRL?

The youngest player to run out in the NRL in 2026 was South Sydney's Dayne Jennings.

Born on 29 October 2007, Jennings debuted in Round 17 against Parramatta at CommBank Stadium, where the Rabbitohs won 32-12. He played three games this season.
