Daniel Tupou Announces Immediate Retirement from Rugby League

Daniel Tupou Announces Immediate Retirement from Rugby League – Four Pointer News Summary:

  • Sydney Roosters veteran Daniel Tupou has announced his immediate retirement from rugby league, days after winning his fourth premiership with the club.
  • A one-club player, Tupou finishes with 307 NRL matches across 15 seasons and 198 tries, standing as the Roosters' greatest-ever try scorer.
  • Tupou turned down a one-year extension from the Roosters as well as multiple offers from the Super League.
  • Coach Trent Robinson described Tupou as "the greatest high-ball specialist of all time" and one of the greats of the club.

Daniel Tupou Retirement Ends a 15-Season, One-Club Career

The Daniel Tupou retirement brings down the curtain on one of the longest one-club careers in the NRL.

Tupou was brought to the Tricolours by recruiter Peter O'Sullivan and debuted in Round 24 of the 2012 season.

He went on to play 307 matches for the Roosters, making him the club's second most-capped player in its history.

His final match was the 2026 NRL Grand Final, where the Roosters defeated the Newcastle Knights at Accor Stadium on 4 October.

Earlier in the season, Tupou brought up his 300th game in the Round 19 clash against the Parramatta Eels at Allianz Stadium on 11 July.

The timing of the announcement is notable. Tupou had recently been tabled a one-year extension by the Roosters and also had multiple offers on the table from Super League clubs.

"I've been thinking about this for a while, and I know the time is right for me to finish playing," Tupou said in a statement. "It's hard to put into words what the Roosters have meant to me because this Club has been such a big part of my life."

Four Premierships and a Club Try-Scoring Record

Tupou's career numbers place him among the most decorated players in Roosters history:

Four premierships: 2013, 2018, 2019 and 2026.

307 NRL matches across 15 seasons.

198 tries, making him the club's greatest-ever try scorer.

10 State of Origin appearances for the New South Wales Blues (2014–22).

24 international appearances for Australia and Tonga.

He scored the Roosters' opening try in their 2013 premiership win against the Manly Sea Eagles and was a key figure in the club's back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019.

"To play more than 300 games, win four Premierships and share those moments with so many great teammates is something I'll always be proud of," Tupou said.

Tupou Thanks Robinson, Politis and Family

In his statement, Tupou paid tribute to Roosters Chairman Nick Politis and long-time coach Trent Robinson, who has coached him for almost his entire career.

"He believed in me from the beginning, helped bring me out of my shell and has always challenged me to keep growing, not just as a footballer but as a man," Tupou said of Robinson.

He also thanked his parents, Michael and Ofa, his wife Kasilita and their son Michael, along with Roosters Members and supporters.

"I'll always be a Rooster, and I'll always be grateful for everything this game and this Club have given me," he said.

Robinson Reacts to Daniel Tupou Retiring

Responding to the Daniel Tupou retirement news, Robinson highlighted the winger's influence on the club's style of play and culture.

"When you look at what Daniel Tupou has achieved over 15 seasons, he will stand as one of the greats," Robinson said. "Toops revolutionised the aerial game at the Sydney Roosters and became the greatest high-ball specialist of all time."

Robinson added that Tupou "has never chased recognition" and had represented the jersey with humility throughout his career.

"We love Toops, we're incredibly proud of him, and his name will always hold a very special place in the history of the Sydney Roosters."

With the Daniel Tupou retirement confirmed, the reigning premiers will head into the 2027 NRL season without one of their most experienced players, with attention turning to how the Roosters fill the vacancy in their backline.
