Most Rebounds in an NBA Game

03/11/2023|SB Staff|NBA Tips & Predictions

The art of rebounding in basketball is somewhat lost on the modern game. This is largely due to the accuracy and proficiency of modern-day offenses.

Still, as rebounds are one of the main pillars of a triple-double, an in-game honour every player covets, they still carry a certain amount of weight with analysts, pundits, and spectators alike.

Over the years certain players have excelled when it comes to recording rebounds. But just what is a rebound and who currently has the most rebounds in an NBA game? Let’s find out.

What is a Rebound in Basketball?

A rebound in basketball is defined as when a player successfully retrieves the ball after a missed field goal or free throw.

The ball can be recovered by either the attacking or defending side, meaning there are offensive and defensive rebounds.

Some players throughout NBA history are synonymous with rebounding, such was their prowess cleaning up the glass at either ends of the court.

Dennis Rodman is perhaps the player most commonly associated with rebounding, such was his skill and tenacity. However, he is not the player with the most rebounds in a single NBA game.

What is the Difference Between an Offensive and Defensive Rebound?

Rebounds are divided into two main categories: offensive and defensive. An offensive rebound is when the team who missed the original shot that led to the rebound opportunity retrieves the ball and therefore, possession does not change.

Whereas a defensive rebound is when the defending team gains possession off the missed field goal or free throw attempt. Most rebounds tend to be defensive ones, simply due to the favourable position of the defence after a failed shot.

Who Has the Most Rebounds in an NBA Game?

Wilt Chamberlain

Was there anything this man couldn’t do? Not only is Chamberlain the record points scorer in a single NBA game, as well as one of the highest points scorers in NBA history, but he also holds the record for the most rebounds in an NBA game.

The legendary centre made 55 successful rebounds on November 24, 1960, against the Boston Celtics.

The Celtics were of course the team of Wilt’s longtime rival and fellow rebound king, Bill Russell. It was actually Russell’s record of 51 that Chamberlain broke, just nine months after Russell had set it.

Both Chamberlain and Russell dominated basketball in the 1960s and are both widely considered to be the greatest centres to ever play the game.

If you browse the list of players with the most rebounds in a single NBA game, you will see Chamberlain and Russell take up the first 12 spots.

Ultimately it was Wilt who got the last laugh, but both are legends in their own right and have more than earned their places in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Need more basketball in your life?
