At its core, basketball, like most sports, is a simple game. You just have to score more points than your opponent.

For some that is easy to do, for others not so much. For these 10 ballers, it’s what they were born to do.

From elite centers to free scoring shooting guards, the top 10 players with the most points in NBA history is a diverse and intriguing list.

There are more buckets between these 10 men than at your local KFC. So, without further ado, here are the top 10 players with the most points in NBA history.

10. Moses Malone – 27,409

Starting things off is the late, great Moses Malone. The three-time MVP and 12-time NBA All-Star amassed 27,409 points during his 20-year NBA career.

Nicknamed “Chairman of the Boards” due to his elite rebounding ability, Malone is widely regarded as one of the greatest centres to ever play in the NBA.

9. Carmelo Anthony – 28,289

Power forward Carmelo Anthony played at the highest level for just shy of two-decades and as a result scored 28,289 points in the NBA.

This means he has the ninth most points in NBA history, but sadly no ring to show for it.

8. Shaquille O’Neal – 28,596

Today’s generation may know him better as a TV personality and a social media star, but in his prime big Shaq was one of the greatest centres to ever grace a basketball court.

The Lakers legend racked up 28,596 points to go along with his four rings, 15 NBA All-Star appearances and his back-to-back-to-back finals MVPs.

7. Wilt Chamberlain – 31,419

Clocking in at over seven-foot, old school baller Wilt Chamberlain put every inch of his disposal to good use, finishing his career with 31,419 points.

Along with his two Championships and four MVP awards, Chamberlain holds a plethora of NBA awards. Most famously, he is the only player ever to have scored 100 points in a single game.

6. Dirk Nowitzki – 31,560

Next up is the only non-American to feature in the top 10 players with the most points in NBA history.

Mavericks’ legend Dirk Nowitzki hails from Germany and bagged an incredible 31,560 points in his 21-year tenure in Dallas.

5. Michael Jordan – 32,292

The only surprising thing about this next player’s inclusion on this list is that he’s not higher up. Widely considered to be the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan unsurprisingly was no slouch when it came to making the scoreboard tick over.

Five MVPs, six Finals MVPs, six rings, a billion-dollar shoe empire and 32,292 points in the NBA. Not bad MJ, not bad.

4. Kobe Bryant – 33,643

Just edging out his hero and coming in at number four is the late, great Kobe Bryant. The man synonymous with the Los Angeles Lakers bagged 33,643 points in his illustrious career.

The cornerstone of the Lakers organization for the best part of two decades, Bryant accomplished everything in the game. You know you’re special when a franchise retires two numbers in your honour.

3. Karl Malone – 36,928

Making the podium of the NBA’s scoring elite, is “the Mailman” Karl Malone. The 14-time All-Star really put the power in power forward.

Weighing in at 117 kg and over two metres tall, Malone made the most of his imposing physique to rack up 36,928 points throughout his career.

2. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar – 38,387

Collecting the silver medal for the most points scored in NBA history is six-time NBA champion Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Kareem played for both the Bucks and the Lakers during his career and in 1984 he broke the NBA’s career scoring record, a record he held for nearly 30 years until..

1. LeBron James – 38,652*

LeBron James became the player with the most points in NBA history on February 7, 2023. King James indeed, LeBron now sits alone on the NBA points scoring throne with (at the time of writing) 38,652 points and counting*

Despite being 38 years old, LeBron has given no indication of wanting to call time on his career that has yielded four rings, four finals MVPs and four regular season MVPs.

It will be some time before LeBron is dethroned with all the other players in the top 10 no longer active in the NBA. When all is said and done and James does eventually call it day, perhaps he will be seen as the GOAT.
