LeBron James Breaks NBA Games Played Record at 41

LeBron James makes history

LeBron James made history on Saturday in Orlando, suiting up for his 1,612th regular-season NBA game to surpass Robert Parish's record that had stood since the Hall of Famer's retirement in 1997.

The 41-year-old Los Angeles Lakers forward is now, unambiguously, the most durable player in league history.

The milestone arrived in a game the Lakers could not afford to lose. Luke Kennard's three-pointer with 0.6 seconds on the clock delivered a 105-104 victory over the Orlando Magic, stretching Los Angeles' winning streak to nine consecutive games and firming their grip on third place in the Western Conference.

Parish's Mark and a Nearly Three-Decade Record

Parish played 21 seasons before retiring in 1997, earning four championships and a Hall of Fame induction. His games-played tally - 1,611 - was considered the kind of record that simply did not get broken. James, now in his 23rd season after debuting on October 29, 2003, has already surpassed Vince Carter as the longest-serving player in NBA history.

Parish was gracious when the moment came. "If anyone is deserving of breaking the iron man record, I would say LeBron James is," he said. "His approach to fitness and what he puts into his body reflects how I took care of myself."

James contributed 12 points, six rebounds and four assists in the record-breaking outing. He had tied Parish's mark just two days earlier in a win over the Miami Heat, recording a triple-double that night. Of the 79 current NBA players not alive when James debuted in 2003, several have already come and gone from the league entirely.

James himself played down the achievement. "It just kind of happened," he said. "It was not on the list of things that I wanted to accomplish." Lakers coach JJ Redick was less modest on his player's behalf: "He's getting selfish with the records."

What Comes Next for James and the Lakers

With nine straight wins, Los Angeles sits at 45-25 - third in the Western Conference - and is building serious momentum ahead of the playoffs. The streak has come with James continuing as a starting contributor, a fact that strikes peers as remarkable. Kevin Durant assessed that James "could play till he's 45 years old."

The games-played record is James' latest addition to a statistical portfolio that already includes the NBA's all-time scoring record and the most postseason games played in league history. He recently passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's career field-goals-made mark of 15,837, entering Saturday with 15,884.

The road trip that produced this record continues, with the Lakers facing the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers before returning home. With the regular season entering its final weeks, Los Angeles' nine-game surge has them firmly in contention for home-court advantage in the first round. For those looking to follow the Lakers' playoff push, understanding how to bet on the NBA can add another dimension to the action.
