The detail that gave the whole thing an almost comic edge was the thumbnail. According to NBC Miami, the image attached to the supposed James press conference was actually a graphic for Dwyane Wade's statue unveiling, and the linked stream itself was offline.

A Heat spokesperson told ESPN's Shams Charania that the post had been created in error by the team's social media staff while preparing for a possible signing.

The same explanation reached the Miami Herald, with the club stressing there was no current validity to the video. That may well be routine contingency planning, yet the specificity of the date turned an internal draft into a genuine storyline.

Reports have consistently placed the Heat, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Philadelphia 76ers as the apparent leaders for James, all of them Eastern Conference sides. James's agent, Rich Paul, has been keen to puncture that narrative, insisting the guessing game is exactly that.

"These people don't know anything," Paul said on his "Game Over" podcast, adding that even he could not predict the timing of a decision. He suggested the wait could stretch on regardless of what outsiders assumed. Miami is not just any bidder, though, and that is what makes the leak sting. James spent four seasons there, reached the Finals every year and won two titles, while club president Pat Riley has since added Giannis Antetokounmpo and openly discussed a reunion.

Between Antetokounmpo, coach Erik Spoelstra and the pull of familiar ground, the Heat can counter almost everything the Warriors are selling.
