How Many Games in an NBA Season: The 82-Game Schedule Explained

Every NBA team plays 82 regular season games. Here's how the 2026-27 schedule splits up, how many playoff games a team can play, and what the season length means for punters.
There are 82 games in an NBA regular season for every team: 41 at home and 41 on the road. With 30 teams in the league, that adds up to 1,230 regular season games in total.
The 82-game season has been the standard since 1967-68. It has survived lockouts, a pandemic and the arrival of the NBA Cup, and the 2026-27 season tips off on Tuesday 20 October (US time) with the same number.
For Aussie fans, opening night lands in the morning and early afternoon AEDT on Wednesday 21 October.
The 2026-27 NBA Season at a Glance

The league hasn't locked in exact postseason dates yet, but the pattern rarely changes: the Play-In follows the final regular season day within a few days, and the Finals wrap up in June. Our NBA 2026-27 season key dates guide carries the full calendar.
What the Schedule Looks Like in Australia
Most NBA games tip off in the US evening, which means they land in the Australian morning and early afternoon.
A 7:30pm Eastern tip-off converts to 10:30am AEDT in late October, then 11:30am AEDT once US daylight saving ends on 1 November. West Coast games starting at 10pm Eastern run into the early afternoon here.
Two quirks catch people out. US dates are a day behind ours, so the NBA Cup final on Friday, December 11 is a Saturday, December 12 watch in Australia.
Also, daylight saving ends in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT on April 4, 2027, so the final week of the regular season and the playoffs run on AEST. Our guide on how to stream the NBA covers where to watch.
How the 82 Games Are Split
Teams don't play everyone the same number of times. The schedule is weighted towards divisional and conference rivals, so the formula looks like this:
- Division opponents: four games against each of the other four teams in the division (16 games)
- Conference opponents: three or four games against each of the other 10 teams in the conference (36 games). A team plays six of them four times and the other four three times, on a rotation
- Other conference: two games against each of the 15 teams in the other conference, one home and one away (30 games)
That's 16 plus 36 plus 30, which gets you to 82. Every team visits every arena at least once a season, which is why a Western Conference side still makes one trip to Boston and Miami every year.
The rotation matters more than it sounds. Two teams in the same conference can face very different strength of schedule depending on which rivals they draw four times and which they only see three times.
How the NBA Cup Fits Into the 82
The NBA Cup (the in-season tournament) doesn't add games to the regular season. It borrows them.
All 30 teams are drawn into six groups of five, three per conference. Each team plays its four group opponents once, two at home and two away, and those four games count towards the regular season standings like any other game.
The six group winners and two wildcards (one from each conference) go through to the knockout rounds.
Each team starts the season with only 80 games locked in. The 22 teams that miss the knockout stage get two extra regular season games scheduled in December to reach 82. Quarter-final losers pick up one extra game. The quarter-finals and semi-finals count in the standings.
The Cup final is the exception. It does not count towards the regular season record or any player's season stats, so the two finalists finish the year having played 83 games, with only 82 of them counting.
Our NBA Cup format and rules guide has the tiebreakers and full format.
Play-In and Playoff Game Counts
The postseason is where the totals start to vary wildly between teams.
The Play-In Tournament
Teams finishing seventh to tenth in each conference go to the Play-In. Seventh hosts eighth, with the winner taking the seventh seed.
Ninth hosts tenth, and the loser is out. The loser of seven versus eight then hosts the winner of nine versus ten for the eighth seed.
That's six Play-In games across the league, and each team involved plays either one or two. Play-In games don't count towards regular season records. For more on the format, see our NBA Play-In Tournament explainer.
The Playoffs
16 teams make the playoffs, eight from each conference. Every round is best-of-seven, and there are four rounds: first round, conference semi-finals, conference finals and the NBA Finals.
- Wins needed for the title: 16
- Fewest playoff games for a champion: 16 (four sweeps)
- Most playoff games for a champion: 28 (four seven-game series)
- Total playoff games across the league: between 60 and 105 (15 series of four to seven games each)
Add the Play-In and the ceiling climbs. A team that comes through two Play-In games and then plays four seven-game series would play 30 postseason games.
Throw in a run to the NBA Cup final and that side would play 113 games in one season, with 82 counting towards the regular season standings.
Our guide to how the NBA playoffs work goes deeper on seeding and home court.
At the other end, a team that misses the Play-In plays exactly 82 games and its season is over by mid-April.
Back-to-Backs and Schedule Density
Fitting 82 games into roughly 25 weeks means teams regularly play on consecutive nights.
The NBA has spent years trimming these, and the 2026-27 schedule averages 14.2 back-to-backs per team, the lowest since the NBA Cup was introduced. No team has more than 16.
The league also eliminated the most punishing stretches entirely for 2026-27: no team plays four games in five nights, eight games in 12 nights or 18 games in 30 nights.
Back-to-backs that involve 750 miles (about 1,200 km) or more of travel dropped to 59, down from 74 last season.
Fewer back-to-backs doesn't mean none, and the second night is still where rest days and tired legs show up.
How the NBA Season Length Has Changed
The NBA has played 82 games since 1967-68, but four seasons in the modern era came up short.
- 1998-99 (50 games): A lockout wiped out the first three months. The season didn't start until February 1999, and teams played 50 games.
- 2011-12 (66 games): Another lockout pushed opening day back to Christmas Day 2011, and the schedule was cut to 66 games.
- 2019-20 (64 to 75 games): The season was suspended on 11 March 2020 because of COVID-19. It resumed in the Orlando bubble, where 22 teams played eight seeding games each. Bubble teams finished on 71 to 75 games, while the eight teams left out stopped in the mid-60s. The Finals finished on 11 October 2020.
- 2020-21 (72 games): With a short off-season after the bubble, the league opened on 22 December 2020 and played a 72-game schedule. That season also introduced the current Play-In format.
Every season since 2021-22 has been back to the full 82 games.
The 65-Game Rule for Awards
Season length now affects individual awards too. Under the collective bargaining agreement signed in 2023, players generally need to appear in at least 65 games to be eligible for MVP, All-NBA, Defensive Player of the Year and most other major end-of-season awards.
A game only counts if the player logs at least 20 minutes, with limited allowances for games of 15 to 20 minutes and for players with season-ending injuries.
The rule caused plenty of noise in 2025-26. Luka Doncic and Cade Cunningham both fell short of 65 and had eligibility granted on appeal, while Anthony Edwards had his challenge denied.
The players' union has pushed for reform, and any changes would shape how award markets play out this season.
Our NBA overtime rules guide is a handy companion here too, because overtime minutes count towards a player's minutes in a game.
Why the Season Length Matters for Punters
An 82-game season is a long grind, and teams manage it. Stars sit out the second night of back-to-backs, minutes get trimmed in blowouts, and contenders often ease off once a playoff seed is locked in during the final fortnight.
That's load management, and it moves NBA markets more than any other sport's equivalent.
For game-day punters, the schedule is a research tool. Check whether a side played the night before, how far it travelled, and whether a key player has been rested on similar nights earlier in the season.
Late injury news hits hardest on head-to-head and line markets, and player props can disappear entirely if a star is ruled out.
Futures run on the same arithmetic. Championship, conference and season-long markets have six months of games to play out, so injuries, trades before the February deadline and schedule strength all shift prices along the way.
The 65-game rule adds another layer to award markets: a player tracking well for MVP can lose eligibility through injury alone.
