05/11/2024|SB Staff|Other Sports News

The 2024 US Presidential Election is this week, with one of either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris set to be sworn in.

Voting in the 2024 Presidential Election officially commences on November 5, 2024, in the US. Polls open around 5am and close as late as 8pm (US time) in some jurisdictions.

It’s expected we’ll know who the winner is late on Wednesday, November 6 in Australia.

Before we all tune in to see who will become the 47th President of the United States, let’s investigate what are the requirements to take the top job?

Can anyone do it? Do you need certain qualifications? Or is it as simple as submitting a cover letter, a CV and setting your LinkedIn to “open to work”?

Let’s find out, shall we? These are the requirements to become President of the United States of America.

Requirements to Become President

Back in the day, when those ye olde blokes in the wigs were writing the rules, also known as the Founding Fathers drafting the Constitution, they decided that there were only three concrete requirements to become President of the United States. They are as follows:

Number 1 – Age

You got any ID? Rule number one is a straight forward one – age. To be eligible to be President you must be at least 35 years old. Sorry kids, grown ups only.

Number 2 – Citizenship

The next requirement revolves around citizenship. Unsurprisingly, you have to be an American to become the President of America.

A person who wants to become the US President must be a “natural born citizen.” This means that they were either born in America or born to American parents.

You are not eligible to run for President if you have become an American citizen through the naturalisation process.

Number 3 – Residency

It’s not just to help shorten the commute to work, to be President you have to live in the US and have done so for at least 14 years.

This is to ensure that potential Presidents are familiar with the people and country they are aiming to lead.

Technically there is a somewhat of a bonus round when it comes to Presidential requirements. People who have already served two terms as President are not eligible to become President, again.

So, there you have it. Those are the requirements wannabe commanders in chief must meet to lead the free world.

Both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris meet all these requirements and one of them is set to be named President later this week.

US Presidential Election 2024 Odds
