CAULFIELD CUP 2026

Caulfield Cup 2026 Prediction and Odds

The Caulfield Cup is a major Australian thoroughbred horse race held each October at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne. It is a Group 1 handicap race that will see some of the best compete.

This year’s race will be held on Saturday, October 17, and will be considered a special one, as it’s the 150th running of this spectacular race. The time of this race has yet to be confirmed.

Quick Picks

Our pick: Cosmic Crusader to win

Value bet: Zahrann each-way

Long shot: Enfjaar each-way

Betting Preview

Contested over a distance of 2,400 metres (about 1.5 miles), the Caulfield Cup is a Group 1 handicap that is open to horses aged three and older. Given that this is the 150th edition, its importance to the racing calendar cannot be understated – it is one of the headline events of Melbourne’s spring racing season.

The handicap conditions mean runners carry different allocated weights, rather than all competing at the same weight, which adds an interesting dynamic to the way the race is run.

It is an important lead-up to the Melbourne Cup, although that race is a longer stamina test at 3,200 metres and takes place at Flemington rather than Caulfield.

The final field and barriers are yet to be finalised, although we already know that there have been several top horses to have been listed as entries. The early list of confirmations for the 150th running features defending champion Half Yours, Turnbull Stakes winner Cosmic Crusader and an international challenge headed by Enfjaar and Wine Dark Sea.

Betting Markets to Watch

The early favourite in the betting odds ahead of this race is Cosmic Crusader . Trained by Andrea Leek, he will enter the race off the back of a Group 1 Turnbull Stakes victory and is allocated a weight of 56kg, which is favourable.

However, the biggest question around him is whether he can do the distance. It is a step up, as he is running 2,400 metres for the first time, meaning he brings high-class middle-distance form rather than proven stamina at the Cup trip.

Wine Dark Sea features prominently in the betting, but the British horse’s odds could change depending on the barrier draw. Questions about how well his form translates to an overseas course could also raise concerns.

And this is why there’s been a jump by some on Zahrann . He won the Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield and carries 53kg, and that combination of relevant course form and a relatively light weight makes him one of the most appealing contenders.

Half Yours completed the Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double in 2025 and returns seeking consecutive Caulfield Cup victories, although this isn’t something that has been done since 1954-55. He will carry 57.5kg, while Mark Zahra will replace Jamie Melham as the jockey, which could create some continuity concerns.

Our Prediction

Check the latest horse racing betting odds at Sportsbet. Our prediction is for Cosmic Crusader to be the likely winner.

Zahrann offers value as an each-way, while Enfjaar is our long shot. Enfjaar is a serious British challenger after winning the Group 3 Glorious Stakes over 2,412 metres at Goodwood. Carrying 54.5kg, jockey Ray Dawson believes the quick ground and a strong gallop would suit him.

If you are newer to the each-way and win markets we have mentioned here, our guide on how to bet on horses breaks down how these bet types work before you back a runner.
