Hopewell Rock, purchased privately earlier in the season, is expected to head into quarantine at Newmarket in around two weeks before making the long trip Down Under.

Wathnan adviser Richard Brown confirmed the excitement building around the stable's maiden Melbourne Cup tilt.

"The Melbourne Cup is an iconic global race and targeting races like this is what Wathnan is striving to do," Brown told the Racing Post. 

"It's a huge challenge shipping to the other side of the world but it's a hugely exciting one and we're all looking forward to it."

Zac Lloyd the Likely Pilot

With retained rider James Doyle unable to make Hopewell Rock's projected Melbourne Cup weight, the search for a new jockey has landed firmly on Sydney-based gun Zac Lloyd.

Lloyd spent time riding for Boughey during a successful working holiday in Britain over June, banging in seven winners from 35 rides. 

That stint peaked with Moonfall's win in the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot, giving the young hoop plenty of runs on the board with the yard.

"Zac Lloyd was riding for George here in the summer so we're hoping we can get him for the ride, but we'll know more nearer the time," Brown said.

Form Lines Stack Up

Hopewell Rock's Melbourne Cup credentials were rubber-stamped when he finished a head second behind Daiquiri Bay in the prestigious Ebor Handicap (2787m) at York.

That effort saw the four-year-old's British Horseracing Authority rating bumped up 4lb to 109, right in the mix for the type of imports that have historically thrived at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November.

His campaign has been one of steady improvement:

- Sixth at Royal Ascot.

- Winner of the Summer Handicap at Glorious Goodwood.

- Close second in the Ebor Handicap at York.

"We were delighted with Hopewell Rock's run in the Ebor. George and his team have been delighted with him since then and they say he really comes to himself in the autumn," Brown said.
