What is a Trifecta?

03/11/2025|SB Staff|Betting Guides & Terminology

Looking to step outside your standard bet types and into the world of exotics? Look no further. A Trifecta bet is the perfect place to start for new punters looking to add a little extra excitement to their next race day.

Unsure exactly what a Trifecta is? Our guide will tell you everything you need to know to be boxing ‘em up with the best of them in no time.

How to Place a Trifecta Bet

Step 1: Log In and Find the Race

First, log into your Sportsbet account . On the home page, you will see a racing section, often with a list of upcoming races. Select the race you want to bet on from the schedule, whether it's a horse race, a greyhound race, or harness racing and you’re ready to explore the world of exotic bets!

Step 2: Navigate to the Trifecta Market

Once you have opened the race card, you will see a variety of betting markets listed. Look for the "Trifecta" option and click on it. This will open the trifecta betting slip.

Step 3: Choose Your Horses

This is the most crucial part of the process. You have a few options for how you can place your trifecta bet, don’t worry though we unpack this even further down in the article as well:

- Straight Trifecta: Simply click on the horses you want to finish 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in that exact order. For example, if you think Horse 5 will win, Horse 2 will finish second, and Horse 8 will finish third, you would select them in that sequence.

- Boxed Trifecta: This is the most common and recommended method for beginners. Select 3 or more horses you believe will finish in the top three. The "Box" option will automatically cover all possible combinations of those horses finishing in any order. For example, if you box Horses 5, 2, and 8, you win as long as they all finish in the top three, regardless of their order.

- Standout Trifecta: If you are highly confident in one horse, you can "stand out" a horse for a specific position (e.g., first place) and then "box" other horses for the remaining two positions.

Step 4: Enter Your Stake

After you have selected your horses, the betting slip will show you the cost per unit. The cost of a boxed trifecta is determined by the number of horses you have chosen. Enter your desired total stake into the box. Remember, you can often enter an amount less than the full cost of the combinations (known as flexi betting) to get a percentage of the total dividend if you win.

Step 5: Review and Confirm Your Bet

Before you finalise your bet, carefully review your selections and the total stake. Once you are happy with your choices, click the "Place Bet" or "Confirm Bet" button. Your bet is now placed. You will see a confirmation and your bet slip will be stored in your betting history.

What is a Trifecta Bet & How Does It Work?

A trifecta bet is a type of exotic betting in horse racing that at its essence requires a punter to select the three horses that they think will finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Trifectas are immensely popular with both new and seasoned punters alike. One of the main reasons being that a small wager can have a large payout, due to the difficulty of correctly selecting the top 3 finishers of a race.

There are two main types of Trifecta bets that patrons are able to place, both are just as exciting as each other. These are the Straight and Boxed Trifectas. For punters feeling extra lucky, there is a mystery trifecta which results in boosted odds but leaves the horses selected in your trifecta to chance.

What is a Straight Trifecta?

One of the most common types of exotic bets is the straight trifecta.

A Straight Trifecta is the simplest and if successful, most profitable kind of Trifecta you can place. For this wager to be successful, you must pick three horses to come first, second and third, in the correct order.

What is a Boxed Trifecta?

A Boxed Trifecta is for those who think they know which trio of horses will finish ahead of the rest of the field but are unsure in which order.

To place a Boxed Trifecta simply nominate three (or more) runners and they can finish first, second and third in any order.

Obviously, a Boxed Trifecta has a higher chance of hitting than a Straight Trifecta, so your return on investment will not be as great.

How Is A Trifecta Payout Calculated?

Speaking of return on investment, now comes everyone’s favourite part - payment.

If you place a successful Trifecta, your pay out or dividend is calculated based on the total tote or pool. As with all exotic bets, all Trifecta wagers go into a tote, this is then divided equally among everyone who placed a winning Trifecta.

This means the payout for a Trifecta can and will change drastically from race to race. The size of a winning dividend is completely dependent on the size of the Trifecta tote, and how many people hit the winning combination along with yourself. There’s a reason your mum puts a $1 on a Melbourne Cup Trifecta every year.

The tote for each race is determined based on which state the race takes place in. Unsure on how the tote system works? See our What is Tote Betting guide.

How to Place a Trifecta

Placing a Trifecta couldn’t be easier on the Sportsbet app and website. Simply select your race, locate the Trifecta tab on the race card, then pick your horses and the position you think each will finish. This is done via the 1, 2, 3 buttons next to each runner on the card.

Simply toggle on the Boxed button at the top of the race card and choose as many horses as you like if it’s a Boxed Trifecta you are after.

You then enter your stake or Flexi percentage (100% Flexi would mean you receive 100% of the dividend of your wager). Review and then finalise your bet and you’re off to the races!

Trifectas are one of the most exciting ways for new punters to experience horse racing, so pick your runners, lay your stake, box them up or leave them straight and enjoy the ride.

Placing a Melbourne Cup Trifecta

How to Play a Melbourne Cup Trifecta

A Melbourne Cup trifecta is a popular choice for punters watching the great race, just the same as any other trifecta, it requires you to predict the top three finishers in the exact order.

Don’t worry, to play a trifecta on the Melbourne Cup, it's not rocket science, simply follow all of the above steps and you’ll be a pro in no time.

Understanding Trifecta Payouts

Are you curious about the winnings on offer for the race that stops the nation?
