Cavalry Girl has quietly built one of the more impressive resumes of any Australian sprinter this winter, stringing together seven wins and four minor placings from just 17 starts. 

The four-year-old mare stepped up from a Benchmark 74 victory in June to salute in the Group 3 Carlyon Stakes (1000m) at Sandown on August 22 – her second stakes win in three runs.

That Carlyon success is more than just a form line. The last two Moir Stakes winners, Mornington Glory and Baraqiel, both used the exact same lead-up to claim Group 1 glory at the old Moonee Valley track.

"I had a bit of a query about Sandown, but she went there and won," Dabernig said. "She's a 1000m specialist so I thought we'd give it a go."

Sandown Switch Adds Fresh Twist to the Moir

With The Valley undergoing redevelopment, Sandown will play host to the $750,000 Group 1 sprint – a shift that adds intrigue to the market. Dabernig admits the step up in class is significant, but the Carlyon-to-Moir pathway has been tried and true.

"I realise it's going to be a different and tougher sort of task but the form out of the Carlyon into the Moir has been pretty good," Dabernig said. "That Benchmark 100 into the Carlyon has worked in the past."

The Ballarat-based trainer has been steadily lifting the bar with the mare, testing where her ceiling really lies.

"While she keeps pulling up well, it might be her time to shine," Dabernig said. "If you can start them off to go their grades to learn the ropes and have them prepared to do it, some find their level very quickly, but others keep progressing."
