Australian Bloodstock Building Towards Strong Melbourne Cup 2026

18/08/2026|SB Staff|Horse Racing News

Australian Bloodstock Building Towards Strong Melbourne Cup 2026 – Trifecta News Summary:

  • Wine Dark Sea has boosted his Melbourne Cup 2026 credentials with a Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes win at Newbury, lifting his rating to 107.

  • Joseph O'Brien-trained stayer Defiantly is another live chance, tackling the Prix Kergorlay this weekend as connections chase a qualifying top three finish.

  • Group 1 winner Royal Supremacy rounds out the trio, with Ciaron Maher plotting a traditional Caulfield Cup campaign through the Heatherlie and Naturalism Stakes.

Wine Dark Sea Punches His Melbourne Cup Ticket

Wine Dark Sea has done exactly what he needed to do at Newbury, saluting in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes to satisfy the Melbourne Cup ballot conditions.

The Harry Charlton-trained stayer accounted for Tabletalk, with regular Australian raider Dubai Honour back in third.

Australian Bloodstock's Jamie Lovett confirmed the win lifted the horse's rating to 107 – comfortably enough to book a Flemington berth on the first Tuesday in November.

"Wine Dark Sea needed to win that race to get his rating up and he's done the job well," Lovett said.

"He's a very good chance of going straight into the Melbourne Cup 2026 but we are keeping all our options open. There is time to run him in either the Caulfield Cup or the Geelong Cup, too."

The stayer is scheduled to enter quarantine on September 9 before touching down in Melbourne later that month.

Defiantly Emerges as Surprise Cups Prospect

The Joseph O'Brien-trained Defiantly wasn't originally pencilled in as a Melbourne Cup horse, but a European summer campaign has changed the conversation.

After going down narrowly to Kizlar in the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot, Defiantly returned an impressive three-length victory in the Goodwood Handicap.

He now heads to the Prix Kergorlay in France, where a top three finish will lock in Melbourne Cup qualification.

"After his Goodwood win, we can make a case for Defiantly to be aimed at the Melbourne Cup," Lovett said.

"We didn't think he had the tactical speed for a Melbourne Cup but if you break the Goodwood race apart, he showed he is fast enough to land on speed, and we know he's a very strong stayer."

Lovett added that a late entry fee would need to be paid given Defiantly's rapid rise up the ratings, with his current mark now high enough to make the Flemington cut.

Royal Supremacy Chasing Caulfield Cup Glory

Group 1 The Metropolitan and Group 2 Q22 winner Royal Supremacy adds even more depth to the Australian Bloodstock hand.

Fresh off a Newcastle trial, the Ciaron Maher-trained galloper is expected to head down the traditional Caulfield Cup path via the Heatherlie Stakes and Naturalism Stakes.

Lovett is being upfront about the Melbourne Cup question mark on this one.

"We are very guarded about the Melbourne Cup because he runs through the bridle and doesn't give himself the chance to stay," Lovett admitted.

"But he's done a fantastic job for us last season, he's trialled well, and he deserves to run in the good staying races in the spring."

A Timely Boost for Two-Time Cup Winners

Australian Bloodstock, previously successful in the Melbourne Cup with Protectionist (2014) and Gold Trip (2022), needed some good news after Al Riffa was ruled out through injury.

Last year's seventh placegetter behind Half Yours is unlikely to race again in 2026, with connections targeting a 2027 return.

With Wine Dark Sea, Defiantly and Royal Supremacy all firming, Lovett and Luke Murrell could saddle up multiple runners in the race that stops the nation on Tuesday 4 November.
