PGA Tour 153rd Open Championship Betting Predictions: Who Are The Main Outsiders & Aussie Hopefuls At Royal Portrush?

In a previous article, we took a look at the main betting favourites as part of our PGA Tour 153rd Open Championship betting prediction event overview ahead of Thursday’s start (AEST TBC).

We highlighted how Scottie Scheffler is deemed the main favourite to take the final major of the golf season, as he attempts to add to the PGA Championship he won earlier this year. Home native Rory McIlroy will also be considered a favourite, while Jon Rahm is a player who enjoys links golf and knows what he is doing around a course like Royal Portrush.

However, who are some of the main outsiders? Who are the players who have long odds but could potentially challenge for the 153rd Open Championship?

PGA Tour 153rd Open Championship Betting Predictions: Main Outsiders

Chris Gotterup will be one of the biggest outsiders of the major, although he comes into it in good form after winning the Genesis Scottish Open last weekend. He has been enjoying positive golf, managed to hold his nerve against the likes of McIlroy on the final day last Sunday, and has shown he isn’t intimidated.

Marco Penge was one of those who pushed him in that tournament, and he is one who is being mentioned by many as a potential dark horse at this year’s Open Championship. He has had a breakout summer in terms of his golf, with his links performances being a huge positive. He had a win at the Hainan Classic and has shown he thrives under pressure. His power game fits Portrush.

Speaking of power games, the likes of Justin Thomas and Viktor Hovland can be considered potential picks. A little value can be found with these individuals.

PGA Tour 153rd Open Championship: Betting Predictions For Australia’s Hopefuls

Adam Scott is arguably the nation’s best chance in Northern Ireland, as he has extensive major experience. He tied for 12th at the US Open and has achieved consistent top-20 finishes in major championships. His strong approach play makes him a contender on any course, especially Royal Portrush, where it is particularly needed.

Jason Day is another who might be worth considering, although his form has been mixed recently. He missed the cut at the PGA Championship, finished T23 in the US Open, finished T4 in the Travelers Championship, and then missed the cut at the John Deere Classic a couple of weeks ago. He has plenty of Open experience, having finished tied for second in 2023. He was six shots off the winner Brian Harman (13-under), but showed he could compete.

Cameron Smith and Lucas Herbert could represent intriguing outsiders who could make the cut and surprise bettors if their form and comfort translate to links golf.
