Singapore GP Tips and Predictions

A short week’s break is all that is afforded to Formula One drivers this week, as they are back on the track just days after the Bahrain GP. This time, they’ll be racing in Singapore.

Max Verstappen secured his first victory of the season in what was a chaotic Bahrain GP at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia.

This week’s race will see lights out at 22:00 AEST on Sunday, October 11, provided there aren’t any weather delays like last week…

Quick Picks

Our pick: Verstappen to win

Value bet: Antonelli each-way

Long shot: Russell each-way

Betting Preview

Marina Bay Street Circuit is 4,927 km (3,061 mi) long and is located on a harbourside, similar in style to the Circuit de Monaco and the Valencia Street Circuit. It will test the very best drivers, with George Russell having been the winner last season.

Questions will be raised about the Brit’s ability to win it again, though, after his third DNF of the season in Malaysia. He was on course to finish third, but a late power unit failure forced him to retire early.

He had an incredible start on the grid, starting seventh and rising to third before the first turn. Similarly, teammate Kimi Antonelli had a positive start, taking pole immediately after starting from third on the grid.

He launched past Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton as soon as the lights went out, but he couldn’t hold the lead when Verstappen got past him before winning the extremely chaotic race.

It was the first time it had been held at the Sepang circuit since 2017, and Verstappen won that edition, too.

Hamilton had a far from smooth ride throughout the race, as he and his team gambled from the start on the tyres. He used slicks and found himself dropping toward the back of the field with car trouble, including being a minute behind the leader at one point.

However, it was a strategy that paid off after some perseverance from the Brit, leading Ferrari to a third-place finish. For readers wanting to understand the gambles that decide races like this, it is worth reading up on how F1 strategy works.

Betting Markets to Watch

The outcome of the Bahrain GP has clearly had an impact on the odds, as there’s confidence being shown in Verstappen to secure back-to-back wins. He finished second here last season, but has never won this race.

Red Bull appears to be coming into their own, which is timely given the issues that Mercedes and Ferrari had last week. With the Dutchman adding to his tally, it is worth seeing where he sits among the drivers with the most F1 championships.

Antonelli remains a value pick as he has been the in-form driver in this year’s campaign. He has eight wins and 13 podium finishes, having failed to make the top-three in just three of the 16 GPs held so far.

The concern is that Mercedes were just not quick enough to win in Sepang, and team boss Toto Wolff called it their “worst weekend of the season”.

Still, it’s clear that they still had enough pace to compete and could benefit once again in Singapore.

Our Prediction

Our prediction is for Verstappen to win, with Antonelli offering value.

As noted before, Russell’s car is likely to be the biggest concern. However, this is why he is a long shot. If his car performs and his team has ironed out any issues, he will have a price worth exploring.
