England vs India 2nd ODI

England and India’s ODI series will continue with the second of their three games taking place at Sophia Gardens in Wales.

It is a day/night match, starting a couple of hours after the first and final games of the series at 22:00 AEST on Thursday, July 16.

Quick Picks

Our pick: India to win

Value bet: Team to win coin toss to bat first

Long shot: A player to score 100+ in the 1st innings

Betting Preview

Both nations will aim to build on their respective performances following Tuesday’s opening ODI match, but this one could present a few more challenges, as it is a day/night game.

The conditions could impact the pitch and how the ball lands when bowled, forcing the batting team to think more carefully about their shot selection.

England managed to put up a respectable 258 before being bowled out with 2.1 overs remaining from the 50, having won the toss and electing to bat.

They had collapsed to 80/5 at one point, but Joe Root (76*) and Liam Dawson (68) put on 121 runs in their 7th-wicket partnership. Axar Patel starred with the ball, taking 4-62 from 9.5 overs as he cleaned up England’s tail.

With the current heatwave in the UK, dew is unlikely to be a factor. The ball will stay dry, so spinners and seamers keep their grip and control, and you don’t get the exaggerated skid and reduced turn that come with a wet ball.

We may see more wear and grip as the game goes on, though, rather than the surface being kept “fresh” by moisture.

With no dew smoothing things out, under‑lights phases can still favour seamers via a bit of extra movement when the air cools slightly, but the surface itself can remain abrasive and help cutters and reverse swing later on.

Spinners are far better off than in a typical subcontinental dewy night, as they can attack with more spin and higher revs because the ball remains dry.

Betting Markets to Watch

We think India are the likely favourites to win , even if their odds may suggest that they will be perceived as underdogs.

Although we’ve yet to see it play this way, the conditions could be better suited to the Indian team, as they’ll place an emphasis on spin and look to try and create some difficult moments for England’s batters.

It’s worth noting that in these conditions, captains have less of an automatic incentive to bowl first. We think that the team that wins the toss will elect to bat first as they can look to take advantage of the pitch early and put runs on the board before trying to defend a score.

With this in mind, there could be value worth exploring in the Over total runs market, especially if a team elects to bat first.

Again, we think there’s value in a spinner to be the leading wicket-taker, with India’s Patel offering value because of his left-arm leg-spin.

Our Prediction

We think India will be the likely winners of the 2nd ODI. The conditions could suit them, despite struggling in the shorter format of the game previously.

Our long shot is for a player to score 100+ runs in the first innings. There is fair value to explore in this market, especially as the team that wins the toss will likely aim to start fast and use the pitch conditions to their advantage.

Virat Kohli, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, and Rohit Sharma are all potential candidates.
