England vs India 1st ODI Prediction

England and India have completed their five-game T20I series and will now turn their attention to a three-game ODI series.

As part of India’s tour of England, the first game will be played on Tuesday, July 14, with the first ball scheduled for 20:00 AEST at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Quick Picks

Our pick: India to win

Value bet: Under in the total run market

Long shot: Yadav to be the leading wicket-taker

Betting Preview

India will be seeking improvements in the shorter form of white-ball cricket following the T20I series, in which they didn’t quite live up to their reputation as the world’s number 1 team with the Kookaburra.

In fact, England wrapped up the series with one game to spare after a nine wicket victory on July 9, and were bowled out for just 76 runs in the third match at Trent Bridge, their second lowest T20 total.

India do remain the world’s number 1 team in ODIs, but have historically been more dominant in the shorter format. Still, they will want to prove to everyone that they deserve their status and can continue to perform over 50 overs.

England enter the series as the number 8-ranked nation – a far cry from their ranking as the number two in the world for T20I. This could suggest that they face difficulties the longer a match goes on, although some have suggested that their style is more suited to 20 overs than 50.

However, this could also be due to the decision to try to go in a different direction. Once very aggressive, England have now sought to adopt a strategy of balance. They’ve also been tested away from home, which could come into play, depending on the conditions.

Betting Markets to Watch

India are likely to be the favourites for the upcoming ODI series, with the 1st game likely to suit them. The UK has been undergoing something of a sustained heatwave, which could create a slow pitch and subcontinent-like conditions.

The spinners will largely benefit from these conditions, with the pitch being dry and cracking in places, allowing the ball grip and turn within the wicket. Batters will also have difficulty timing their shots, which could cause wickets to tumble, whether through mis-timed shots or unpredictable bounces.

As a result, we think a leading wicket-taker will be a spinner in this game, leaving value in players like Kuldeep Yadav.

He excels in this format of the game and brings a unique variation to the wicket with his left-arm leg-spin.

The total run market could offer value in the under, depending on the conditions. If the pitch is slow, batters could have trouble hitting the ball cleanly.

India are our pick to be the likely winners of this 1st ODI. They are the best team in the world and will look to use the conditions to their advantage.

A long shot is for Yadav to be the leading wicket-taker for the reasons stated above.
