Who Has Taken a Test Hat-Trick for Australia?

24/07/2025|SB Staff|Cricket News

Who has taken a hat-trick in Test cricket for Australia?

It remains one of the most historic and impressive feats in the game of cricket for a bowler, mainly because of how rarely they come about.

Only 10 men have taken the 12 Australian hat-tricks in the history of Test cricket, dating all the way back to Fred Spofforth — the first bowler in Test history to achieve the feat, to present day, where everyone's favourite Victorian, Scott Boland, etched his name into the record books.

Who are the other Australian men to take a Test hat-trick? How and where did they happen? And what are some of the unique records that some Australian Test cricketers hold with their hat-tricks? Let’s find out.

Check out Sportsbet’s comprehensive list of Australian cricketers to take a Test hat-trick below!

List Of Every Australian Test Cricket Hat-Trick

Scott Boland’s Test Hat Trick - 2025 vs West Indies, Jamaica

It would have to take something pretty darn special to usurp the effort of your teammate who had just taken the quickest five-wicket haul in Test history only a half-hour earlier in his 100th Test match as the craziest thing to happen on a cricket field that day, but Scott Boland went and did just that.

Throwing the ball in the 12th over, Boland conceded two runs in his first over before coming back and setting up Windies all-rounder Justin Greaves by getting him to edge to Beau Webster at first slip.

He followed it up by pinning firebrand Shamar Joseph on the pad in front, which was given lbw on review before getting through the defense of spinner Jomel Warrican to complete another barely believable feat in an extraordinary Test career.

Peter Siddle’s Birthday Hat Trick - 2010 vs England, Brisbane

“PETER SIDDLE’S GOT A HAT-TRICK ON HIS BIRTHDAY.”

We can still hear Mark Taylor’s voice bellowing from the commentary box up at the Gabba…. And we’re all still telling Mark Nicholas to be quiet after everyone’s favourite villain, Stuart Broad, took a review in vain.

It’s probably the most famous hat-trick ever taken in an Australian shirt.

With the opening day of the 2010/11 Ashes leaning the tourists' way, the birthday boy stamped his authority on the series and wrote himself into cricketing folklore.

Just as Alistair Cook was settling in to make the first lot of many, many runs that tour, Siddle intervened in the 66th over of the day when he found Cook’s edge, which was well taken by Shane Watson in the slip cordon.

The next ball, Siddle castled wicketkeeper Matt Prior, who was caught on the crease trying to dig out a yorker and lost his middle stump.

Then came the theatre and the moment.

Stuart Broad took forever to come out to bat, but was sent back in a matter of moments when he was hit on the pads, dead in front. It was given out on field by umpire Aleem Dar, sending the capacity crowd at the Gabba into raptures.

We needed to wait another few minutes to properly celebrate the achievement after Broad sent it upstairs for a review, but once it was confirmed, Pandemonium ensued.

Glenn McGrath’s Test Hat Trick - 2000 vs West Indies, Perth

Entering the Australian summer, hunting his 300th Test wicket, it all came very quickly for the great Glenn McGrath. Not only did he hit the milestone in the second Test of the summer, but it came in the most spectacular way possible.

After a 10-wicket match at the Gabba, McGrath could sniff the milestone early on day 1 at the WACA.

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, McGrath made the moment about him.

In the ninth over, he ripped the heart out of the West Indies top order. He found the edge of opening batter Sherwin Campbell’s bat, which was taken at slip comfortably by Ricky Ponting to get the ball rolling.

Next, he enticed Brian Lara into one of his big, expansive drives that was well held by Stuart MacGill in the gully. Not a bad person to claim as your 300th Test wicket!

The final piece was when he bounced out Windies skipper Jimmy Adams to complete the hat-trick. With a packed cordon, McGrath sent down a short-pitched ball which was popped up to Mark Waugh at short-leg for a comfortable catch.

Shane Warne’s Home Ground Hat Trick - 1994 vs England, MCG

The King taking a hat-trick in his own backyard, you say? It just wouldn’t be Warnie!

And against England in an Ashes Test to properly roll them? Say no more, it’s just what Shane Warne did.

After taking a bag of six in the first bowling innings, there was only one way that Warne could better that feat, and that was to take a hat-trick in the second innings.

He removed Phil DeFritas and Darren Gough with his usual, brilliant guile and leg-spin witchcraft, before David Boon pulled off what is still considered one of the best short-leg catches of all time to dismiss Devon Malcom and give Warne one of his many crowning moments in the game.

Damien Fleming’s Hat Trick on Test debut - 1994 vs Pakistan, Rawalpindi

What’s better than simply taking a Test hat-trick? Taking a Test hat-trick on debut!!

That’s what came the way of Damien Fleming, who became the third person in Test cricket history to achieve the feat of a hat-trick on Test debut.

Batting first in Rawalpindi, Australia piled on 521/9d before rolling Pakistan the first time for just 260.

After missing an opportunity in the first Test to win, Aussie captain Steve Waugh made Pakistan follow on and set his bowlers the task of bowling out the home side in seven sessions.

They were let down badly by their fielders as the Pakistanis racked up 537 runs and batted Australia back out of the game.

In the last two balls of his 23rd over, Fleming picked up Nazir and Inzamam. Nazir failed to keep the flick down. He was caught at mid-wicket by Bevan. Big Inzamam played across the line and was caught plumb in front. Fleming dismissed Malik on the first ball of his 24th over. The ball held its line and swung away just a tad to induce an edge off Malik’s bat. That was the 328th ball of his innings, a near-unplayable ball on a flat surface.

Merv Hughes’s Insane Three-Over Hat Trick - 1988 vs West Indies, Perth

Taking a Test hat-trick is rare enough. Taking a Test hattrick over the span of two overs… not totally beyond the realms of possibility in cricket.

But what about a hat-trick spanning three different overs and two different innings? That’s how ‘Swervin’ Mervyn Hughes wrote himself into Australian cricketing history with his hat-trick at the WACA.

After the touring West Indies racked up 449 runs in the first innings of the second Test, the big Victorian removed Curtly Ambrose with the final ball of his 36th over of the innings before taking the wicket of the number 11 Patrick Patterson with the first ball of his next over and ending the innings.

Heading into the next bowling innings on a hat-trick, Hughes removed West Indies opener Gordon Greenidge with the very first ball of the innings, completing his hat-trick.

Lindsay Kline’s Test Hat Trick - 1958 vs South Africa, Cape Town

Linking up with the great Richie Benaud in the spin department for the tour to South Africa, Lindsay Kline took advantage of spin-friendly conditions in Cape Town.

After Australia piled up 449 in the first innings, The Aussies bowled South Africa out for 209 and promptly put the Proteas in again.

They crumbled, and Kline reaped the benefits by cleaning up the tail, taking a hat-trick with the last three balls of the innings to wrap up the match and the series for Australia.

Jimmy Matthews' Double Hat Trick Game - 1912 vs South Africa, Manchester

Not only does Jimmy Matthews have two hat-tricks for Australia, but Jimmy Matthews has two hat-tricks for Australia in the same game.

With Test cricket still in its infancy, Matthews was part of the team that played South Africa… in Manchester, of all places.

The Aussies batted first and piled up 448 runs before Matthews ran through the tail to end the South Africans' first innings with a hat-trick.

They were made to follow on and were bowled out for a measly 95, with Matthews taking control of the game with a hat-trick of wickets in the middle order to derail the South African innings.

Hugh Trumble’s Hat Trick in his Final Test - 1904 vs England, Melbourne

There’s certainly one way to end your career.

After being coaxed out of retirement, Trumble played his final Test against England at his home ground.

Hugh Trumble’s First Test Hat Trick - 1902 vs England, Melbourne

As captain of the team, Trumble led from the front and became the first Australian captain to claim a Test hat-trick.

In the second Ashes Test of 1902, Trumble cleaned up the innings and extended the Aussies' lead in the series.

Fred Spofforth Takes the First Australian Test Hat Trick - 1879 vs England, Melbourne

Commonly known as ‘The Demon Bowler’, Fred Spofforth became the first Test bowler ever to take a hat-trick.

He finished the Test with 13 wickets to his name, including the sequence where he removed Vernon Royle, Francis MacKinnon, and Tom Emmett with consecutive deliveries to be the first ever player to take a hat-trick.

Bragging rights over the English again!

So there’s our list of all the Australian men to have taken a hat-trick in Test cricket.
