24/01/2025|SB Staff|Cricket News

The Indian Premier League (IPL) Auction has become one of the richest sports events in the world.

But have you ever caught yourself wondering, just how much are the top IPL contracts worth across a few short months of play per year?

Well, worry no more. We have compiled a list of the top 20 IPL contract earners for the 2025 season alone.

There is some serious cash being thrown around too, with some of our Aussie fast bowlers and all rounders among the highest earners, and most expensive buys in competition history.

So, in the words of Jerry Maguire, show me (them, ahem) the money!

Looking for the latest IPL Odds? You can find them here.

NOTE: Currency converted to AUD

20. Mohammed Shami (Sunrisers Hyderabad) – $.1.82 million AUD

An integral part of India's international set-up in all formats, the veteran seamer will be back for yet again after being picked up for a hefty sum in the IPL Auction, this time by the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Shami is inching closer to a return from injury after being ruled out of entire disastrous campaign for the Border-Gavaskar test series downunder.

19. Noor Ahmad (Chennai Super Kings) - ($2.14 million AUD)

Chennai Super Kings latest spin-king hails from a far off land known as Afghanistan. At only 20 years old this budding spin prodigy is sure to excite with his tutelage under Afghanistans very own Rasid Khan

Keep an eye out for this left armed tweaker spinning his web around rival batters.

18. Kagiso Rabada (Gujarat Titans) – ($1.96 million AUD)

South Africa’s talismanic spearhead across all formats marks a return to the IPL with a change of scenery. After multiple seasons at the Punjab kinds he has joing the cross country rivals Gujarat Titans.

As South Africa’s only player in the top 20 the weight is on his shoulders perform. Fortunately for the Titans his broad shoulders are used to carrying teams and must be burning with the fire to continue dominating fast bowling against the worlds best.

17. Thangarasu Natarajan (Delhi Capitals) – $1.96 million AUD

After half a decade at the Sunrisers, Natarajan makes the move into his nations capital. A dependable left arm seamer, he has remained in the sites of IPL franchises due to his ability to strike when needed.

For his sake we hope he can recreate his performance from his Aus test series three years ago.

16. Jitesh Sharma (Royal Challengers Bangalore) – $2.01 million AUD

Move over punjab, this Indian firebrand is on the move and ready to take Bangalore by storm. At 31 years of age, time is not on his side and his new franchises intent is in the name. Challenging for the title is in their DNA and splashing the cash on an experienced batter who often flies under the radar promises dividends.

15. Marcus Stoinis (Punjab Kings) - $2.01 million AUD

Australia’s first superstar on the list, Marcus Stoinis turns the hulk green and gold when playing for Australia. After years of maintaining his position as a marquee, franchise altering star Stoinis has made the jump to the Kings.

After a barnstorming run of form to end the BBL season Stoinis takes this confidence into the mega tournament. Hoping to take them back to the top, Aus’s all star all rounder is ready to put bat to ball.

14. Ishan Kishan (Sunrisers Hyderabad) – $2.05 million AUD

Much like Shreyas Iyer, Kishan has long been spruiked as one of the next big things in Indian cricket. The problem is, due to the glut of talent, how does he fit into the national team when there only needs to be one wicketkeeper in the side?

That has not stopped Hyderabad from rolling out the chequebook to attract the prodigiously talented Kishan, prying him away from his long term home of Delhi for the 2025 season.

13. Phil Salt (Royal Challengers Bangalore) – $2.1 million AUD

Perhaps the most perplexing of the entire top 20. Phil Salt is by no means a slouch, putting both bat and glove to ball ensures his versatility in an ever changing tournament. However becoming the 12th highest paid player in the 2025 IPL was not on many cricket fans bucket lists.

Will yet another English international star shine bright or will it fade like his IPL contract?

12. Mitchell Starc (Delhi Capitals) – $2.14 million AUD

Fancy taking a record off your captain and best mate? That is exactly what the big left-armer did in 2024

After announcing his intention to return to the IPL after a long hiatus, the bidding war was like nothing we have ever seen before as clubs clamoured for his services.

Despite a stellar performance in last years IPL, his salary has experienced a hefty drop, being cut in half from $4.43 million. Could this be the results of a barnstorming summer of cricket where he ripped the Indian top order batsmen apart or is it a reflection of the drive to put more faith in youth. Only time will tell.

11. Mohammed Siraj (Gujarat Titans) – $2.23 million AUD

Public enemy number 1 in Australia, Mohammed Siraj has earnt the ire of Australian fans two Indian tours in a row and doesn’t look to be stopping now. One of world crickets most fiery competitors, Siraj wears his heart on his sleeve for his country and can’t be faulted for that.

But will he fire when the Titans need him to? Only time will tell but his style of quick, ruthless cricket plays well in a high stakes environment and his high IPL salary is sure to turn heads.

10. Josh Hazlewood (Royal Challengers Bangalore) - $2.28 million AUD

Leading the way for our Aussie contingent in the IPL auction, ‘the Hof’, conventially known as Josh Hazlewood puts his test accuracy into play whenever he steps on the field. With a mantra of Line and Length this impressive T20 contract proves that old dogs do have new tricks.

9. Jofra Archer (Rajasthan Royals) - 2.28 million AUD

Englands most feared quick makes his much anticipated return to the IPL. After years of injury setbacks Archer returned to the English white ball squad and is looking for a bullsie on the stumps in this years tournament.

8. Trent Boult (Mumbai Indians) – $2.28 million AUD

Who said Kiwi’s couldn’t perform on the big stage. After years of heroics in all three formats for his birth nation of New Zealand, Trent Boult is finally getting his time in the sun (financially of course).

At 35 years old he has taken 600 international wickets and will be looking to prove his worth yet again.

7. KL Rahul (Delhi Capitals) – $2.55 million AUD

He is one of the most polarising active Indian cricketers of modern times, having cycled through four, no make that five different IPL franchises

Securing captaincy for the Super Giants last year, and back in favour with the national selectors in two out of three forms of the game, Rahul is perhaps the Indian you would least expect to be a polarising figure. Yet here he is at his fifth franchise under the tutelage of one of the greatest cricketers of all time, Ricky Ponting.

6. Jos Buttler (Gujarat Titans) – $2.9 million AUD

This explosive English batter puts bowling attacks on notice world wide. At the forefront of the poms efforts to revolutionise test cricket into a T20 style game of big hits, Jos Buttler has found his groove.

The Titans will be banking on his big hitting continuing on the pitch and his steady heads prevailing behind the stumps with Buttler earning the highest IPL contract for a Batter Keeper from the IPL Auction.

5. Yuzvendra Chahal (Punjab Kings) - $3.28 million AUD

You wouldn’t expect it but Yuzvendra is the oldest player rounding out the top 5 at 34 years old. Bringing over 150 games of international experience into the equation boosts the Kings chances 10 fold.

A crowd favourite due to his quiet nature, Chahal is the most expensive spinner in the this years IPL auction and will be sorely tested trying to help direct this young yet experienced Kings team around the park.

4. Arshdeep Singh (Punjab Kings) – $3.28 million AUD

Becoming a mainstay of the Indian T20 team, Arshdeep Singh is a fiery left-arm quick who lets his skill do the talking. Having taken 47 wickets in 55 games for the national side, this quick has an impressive strike rate.

With stats like his it’s no surprise that Arshdeep was the most expensive bowler to be selected in the 2025 IPL Auction.

3. Venkatesh Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders) – $4.33 million AUD

Unknown to all but the most diehard cricket fans in Aus, Venkatesh Iyer has impressed across the past few years following his departure from India’s national team.

At 29 years old, this powerful middle order batting all rounder is sure to impress for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Despite the same last name, Venkatesh has no relation to the next man on this list.

2. Shreyas Iyer (Punjab Kings) – $4.87 million AUD

The fast-rising Indian batter has been close for a few years now to grabbing international cricket by storm and 2024 was his year.

Following a breakout performance at the 2023 50-over World Cup, Iyer earnt the big big bucks for the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, unfortunately that relationship has proved to be short lived with his new team the Punjab Kinds hoping for him to fire after dropping the big bucks on him.

1. Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants) – $4.92 million AUD

If Ricky Ponting thinks you are good enough to be the captain of a cricket team that he coaches, then two things must be true.

One is that you are very good at cricket. The other is that you probably deserve to be paid a lot of money to play it.

Despite being entrusted with the Delhi Capitals reigns across 2024 by Punter, Rishabh Pant now proudly sits atop the 2025 IPL contract list.

With this years IPL set to take off with a bang why not brush up on your betting terms with our Betting Odds Explained guide or delve into the wonderful world of cricket with out How to Bet on Cricket Explained article.
