KKR's pace spearhead Harshit Rana will miss the entirety of IPL 2026 after undergoing knee surgery, dealing a significant blow to Kolkata's bowling stocks less than two weeks before their campaign gets underway.
The 24-year-old sustained the injury during a T20 World Cup 2026 warm-up fixture and underwent surgery on February 9, ruling him out well before the tournament's March 28 start.
Rana had been one of KKR's most consistent performers with the ball over the past two seasons, claiming 19 wickets during the franchise's 2024 title run and a further 15 in 2025 - 34 wickets across those two campaigns - before being retained for ₹4 crore ahead of this year's auction.
A Pace Attack Already Under Severe Strain
The setback compounds significant personnel challenges already facing KKR. Sri Lankan quick Matheesha Pathirana, the franchise's headline auction acquisition, is also recovering from a T20 World Cup injury with no confirmed return date for the early rounds.
Earlier this month, the BCCI directed KKR to release Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman, and the franchise moved to sign Zimbabwe's Blessing Muzarabani as cover, with the fast bowler expected in Kolkata around March 17.
Muzarabani brings genuine credentials - he was the joint third-highest wicket-taker at the T20 World Cup, finishing with 13 scalps. But with Rana absent and Pathirana's availability uncertain, the pace load falls on Vaibhav Arora, Kartik Tyagi, Umran Malik and Akash Deep. Of those four, only Arora has featured consistently in IPL cricket in recent seasons.
A source familiar with the team's planning acknowledged the situation to Zee News: "Harshit Rana unfortunately will not be available but it gives the opportunity to other bowlers in the squad - Vaibhav, Umran, Kartik and Akash - to step up and grab the opportunity. No replacement has been decided yet."
KKR Eye Akash Madhwal as Rana Replacement
With no official signing confirmed, Akash Madhwal has emerged as the primary candidate. The right-arm quick claimed 5 for 5 for Mumbai Indians in the 2023 IPL Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants - a spell that announced him as one of the domestic game's most dangerous pace bowlers in high-pressure situations - before going unsold at the IPL 2026 auction, which leaves him available as a replacement outside the standard process.
Simarjeet Singh and Chetan Sakariya have also been identified as options, both bringing domestic experience that could add depth behind Muzarabani. Simarjeet has 11 wickets across 14 IPL appearances for previous franchises, while Sakariya's left-arm angle offers something different to the rest of Kolkata's attack.
KKR open their IPL 2026 campaign against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on March 29 - the early hours of March 30 AEDT for Australian viewers - with the full tournament running through to May 31. For those looking to follow the action, IPL betting odds will be available throughout the competition.
