Tszyu vs Lara Confirmed for WBA Middleweight Title

title fight confirmed

Australia's biggest boxing name is headed for a second world title, and he will chase it in front of a home crowd.

No Limit Boxing recently confirmed that the Tim Tszyu vs Lara fight will see him challenge Erislandy Lara for the WBA middleweight belt, with the bout penned in for late in 2026.

Earlier talks had pencilled the bout in for December, but Fox Sports Australia now reports it is expected to take place in late November, with the Gold Coast a strong possibility to host.

No Limit says the fight is official and confirmed, and on paper it already looks like the standout Australian boxing booking of the year.

The fight matters because it is a genuine world-title opportunity for a fighter carrying one of the sport's most recognisable surnames. If Tszyu pulls it off, he does so against a decorated champion who has never been knocked out, and he does it on his own turf.

Tim Tszyu vs Lara Fight Date Takes Shape

No Limit has confirmed the matchup and the broad timeframe, yet the specifics remain open. Tim Tszyu's next fight date and time, along with a locked-in venue, ticket details and a broadcaster, are all expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Several Australian cities are circling the fight, with the Gold Coast reported as a strong possibility, although No Limit has not named a host city yet. For a bout of this size, a confirmed home-soil fixture would carry a meaningful tourism and economic boost for whichever city lands it.

What is not in doubt is the prize. Lara's WBA middleweight strap will be on the line, and the winner walks away a world champion in one of boxing's blue-riband weight classes.

If you are new to how the divisions stack up, it is worth having boxing weight classes explained before the first bell.

How Tszyu Earned His WBA Title Shot

Tszyu earned this shot the hard way. In July he outpointed the former unified welterweight king Errol Spence Jr over the full distance in Sydney, a unanimous decision that stretched his record to 28 wins, three losses and 18 knockouts.

Crucially, he is staying put at the 160-pound middleweight limit rather than dropping back to super welterweight where he once ruled. "At 160 I feel strong, I feel sharp and I feel dangerous," Tszyu said in the announcement. "Middleweight is my division now. Spence was just the appetiser."

Guiding him is Jeff Fenech, the former three-division champion who joined the corner in April 2026 and oversaw the Spence win.

There is a family thread here too, since Tszyu's father Kostya unified the junior welterweight division at 140 pounds, meaning a win over Lara would make Tim the first Tszyu to claim world titles in two weight classes, and only the third Australian to do so after Fenech and Liam Paro.

Tim Tszyu vs Lara: Erislandy Lara's WBA Reign Explained

Lara is no soft touch for a man moving up. The 43-year-old Cuban southpaw carries a record of 32-3-3 with 19 knockouts, and he has never been stopped across his entire professional career.

He first claimed the WBA "Regular" middleweight belt in 2021 before the governing body elevated him to full champion in 2023, and he has since made four successful defences.

Lara previously held WBA honours at super welterweight as well, and Tszyu is under no illusions. "He's slick, he's clever and stylistically he's very hard," he said in the announcement, describing exactly the kind of awkward, patient boxer who can turn a title fight into a long night.

For now the countdown is really a waiting game. Promoters are expected to firm up the date, venue, ticketing and broadcast arrangements over the next few weeks, with the host city still to be named.

Should Tszyu dethrone Lara on home soil, he would etch a two-division legacy of his own, and that is a stake worth watching the calendar for. As the bout firms up, it is worth keeping an eye on the latest Grade A fight odds to see how the market sizes up this title clash.
