22/01/2025|SB Staff|Australian Open 2025 Tips & Predictions

For the first time in his career, Alex de Minaur has advanced to the Australian Open Quarter-finals.

De Minaur, the last remaining Aussie left in the Open, powered past American Alex Michelsen 6-0, 7-6, 6-3 to move on to the final eight in the men’s draw.

He has now reached the Quarters in all four Grand Slams and will be looking to make it to the final four for the first time ever.

That’s where the good news ends unfortunately. For his maiden Quarter-final match at the AO, De Minaur has drawn No.1 seed Jannik Sinner.

Yep, all that stands between Alex and an inaugural Semi-final appearance at a Grand Slam is the best player on the planet. Strap in, this is as big as it gets for Aussie tennis.

Jannik Sinner vs Alex de Minaur Preview

First, the good news. Alex de Minaur is playing the best tennis of his career at the moment. He is fit and firing and there are no apparent injury concerns that might derail his chances of an upset here.

He’s dropped just the one set so far at the 2024 Aus Open, while Sinner has dropped two.

Also, after seeing Sinner struggle in the early stages of his most recent match, with the Italian even calling for a medical timeout, the Demon and his team will no doubt be thinking “we could have a shot here.”

Now for the bad news. Jannik Sinner and Alex de Minaur have met on nine occasions in their professional careers, with Sinner winning all nine.

That only just begins to illustrate the Italian’s dominance over De Minaur. Across those nine meetings, they’ve played a total of 21 sets, with Sinner winning a staggering 20 of them.

In fact, there is only one more lopsided rivalry currently active in all of Tennis. That is Novak Djokovic against Gael Monfils, with the Serbian superstar extending his stranglehold over the veteran Frenchman to 20-0 earlier this month at the Brisbane International.

If Alex wants to win here, he’ll need to defy more than just world rankings, he’ll need to defy history.

Jannik Sinner vs Alex de Minaur Prediction

The H2H odds reflect Sinner’s dominance between the two in their nine previous meetings.

At the time of writing, he is a touch better than a 4/1 favourite and all things considered, it’s hard to argue with that price.

If De Minaur wants to spring an all-time upset here, he’ll need to come out firing, get the home crowd going early and try and force Sinner into another slow start.

We can see him doing just that, but Jannik has shown he is a master at stopping the bleeding as the contest progresses and the longer this match goes, the more likely he is to wear the Demon out.

This could turn into a beep test with racquets knowing both competitor’s styles, but unless Sinner’s injury concerns in his last match are far worse than he and his team have let on, we struggle to see any clear path to victory for Aussie Alex here.

Prediction: Jannik Sinner.

Betting tip: SGM - De Minaur to win the first set & set betting – 3-1 Sinner.

When is Alex de Minaur Playing Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open?

Date: Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

Time: TBD*

Location: Rod Laver Arena*

Where to watch: Channel 9, 9Now, 9Gem, Stan Sport.

*Both time and location can change due to scheduling.
