Richmond vs Essendon Prediction - Round 11 2026

21/05/2026|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

There are Friday night games, and then there is Dreamtime at the 'G - one of the AFL calendar's most culturally significant occasions.

But in this Round 11 fixture the spectacle comes wrapped in something a little more uncomfortable: a genuine wooden spoon shoot-out after only 10 rounds.

Yet the 2026 edition carries a very different energy. Both clubs arrived at Round 11 in dire straits - each sitting on just one win for the season.

The winner pockets four critical premiership points and breathes a little easier. The loser? Is one step closer to a wooden spoon in 2026.

Richmond struggled against the Saints last weekend, losing every quarter and going down by a semi-respectable 36 points; while the Dons were jumped by Fremantle, conceding 10 goals to one at half-time before an improved second half saw them defeated by 43.

Form? Not much from either side. Stakes? Higher than they should be for a bottom of the table clash in Round 11.

Richmond's injury news went from bad to worse against St Kilda, with Campbell Gray straining a hamstring, Sam Cumming limping off late with a cork, and veteran defender Nick Vlastuin also sore with a back complaint.

Meanwhile, Matthew Lloyd conceded Essendon is officially in crisis mode after another disappointing performance that saw flocks of fans leaving at half-time.

The winning club is awarded the Kevin Sheedy Cup, and the best player on the ground is awarded the Yiooken Award - tonight, both trophies take a back seat to the four points.

Richmond Tigers vs Essendon Bombers Match Predictions and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

With Richmond being down to its last 26 to choose a team from, Essendon have run out of reasons to lose this week. The Bombers simply must win. No excuse accepted.

They were terrible for the first hour against Fremantle and copped a smashing before somewhat getting into the game and chipping the ball around, as they do.

Looking at the Essendon team, they had too many inside midfielders, meaning Sam Durham again has moved into different roles.

He’s arguably their best inside man, so moving him makes little sense. They need to find new roles - or new homes - for Parish and Caldwell.

The Tigers gave great effort against the Saints and really did hang tough for most of the afternoon. And plenty of the Tiger Cubs are showing promising signs for the coming seasons.

Trezise, Campbell, Grlj and Retschko all looked good last week in the loss. Sports commentator Gerard Whateley said the second Friday night game is “the invisible game”.

This might not ring true for fans looking for high-quality footy.

Head-to-head prediction: Essendon Bombers by 21 points.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

All eyes on Nate Caddy for the opening major. The 20-year-old key forward has been one of the few genuine bright spots in what has been a deeply disappointing Essendon season.

At Adelaide Oval earlier this season, Caddy finished with a career-high four goals ; he’s clearly got the ability there.

With Caddy having debuted in Round 11, 2024 - fittingly, against Richmond, and accumulating 35 goals across 30 career games, expect the Dons to find him early and get on the board.

Betting tip: Nate Caddy.

Most Disposals Prediction

While Archie Roberts regularly racks up possessions from the back half for the Dons, this is a game where we're going all-in on Zach Merrett.

The three-time All-Australian and six-time Crichton Medallist is Essendon's engine; the Dons attacking focal point. Against the Tigers, he simply goes to another level.

Merrett won the Yiooken Award for his best-on-ground performance in the 2023 fixture. We’re expecting the Dons to notch a win here – if they’re going to Merrett will have to be a big part of that.

Betting tip: Zach Merrett.
