GWS Giants vs Richmond Tigers Prediction - Round 5 2026

10/04/2026|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

Sunday afternoon Gather Round action features a Barossa Valley clash between GWS and Richmond, who are both looking to get their seasons back on track.

The GWS Giants will look to find some form fresh off the bye when they meet the Richmond Tigers at Barossa Park.

At 1-3 and occupying the bottom four, it has been a disappointing start to Adam Kingsley’s fourth year in charge, particularly after such a promising Opening Round victory against a strong Hawks squad.

His side will face the winless Tigers on the final day of Gather Round, with a loss spelling real trouble for any finals aspirations.

Richmond also showed promise in their season opener before suffering three straight defeats, most recently a 92-90 loss to Port Adelaide despite playing heavily undermanned.

The Giants won last season’s meeting between these sides in dramatic fashion, clawing back a 34-point third-quarter deficit to triumph 80-77.

Many are predicting a sloppy game between two underperforming rivals, at least there will be wine to help smooth proceedings here.

GWS Giants vs Richmond Tigers Match Predictions and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

We’re back to the Barossa for GWS and Richmond – two clubs with monster injury lists. The Giants are finally getting a few soldiers back, and boy do they need them.

Without Sam Taylor and Jack Buckley behind the ball, they’ve looked uncharacteristically vulnerable in defence.

The GWS forward line has also been underwhelming lately, with Jesse Hogan and Jake Stringer struggling to find their rhythm since their Opening Round blitz.

However, Richmond’s game style was bizarre last week; they seemed all too willing to go long down the line, asking inexperienced key forwards to compete against seasoned defenders. It simply did not work, as they allowed eight intercept marks to Port's Aliir Aliir.

Richmond is stacking up the losses, but this is a contest they might be able to pinch – or at least keep within striking distance if they can clean up their transition play. Ultimately, we think the Giants' top-end class will be the deciding factor in a desperate struggle.

Head-to-head prediction: GWS Giants by 21 points.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

Jesse Hogan remains the most dangerous target in the Giants' forward half and is our pick to get the scoreboard ticking early.

While Hogan’s been quiet for the last few weeks, he’s had time off with the bye and we’re expecting him to be rejuvenated and ready to kick goals against an inexperienced Tigers defence.

The GWS mids will look to the big man early to get that scoreboard ticking over.

Betting tip: Jesse Hogan.

Most Disposals Prediction

So far this season, GWS haven’t adapted well to the absence of Tom Green. The burden falls squarely on new recruit Clayton Oliver to help pick up the slack when it comes to creativity and distribution in the middle.

GWS would’ve worked on their combinations in the opening four rounds of the competition and last week’s bye.

This clash against Richmond provides the perfect opportunity for Oliver to inject himself further into the Giants attack.

While Richmond's Tim Taranto will work hard, Oliver’s ability to accumulate touches in tight spaces makes him the safest bet to lead the stats sheet.

Betting tip: Clayton Oliver.
