Freo were comprehensively outplayed from the opening whistle, managing just five goals vs Hawthorn and now find themselves hosting a sudden-death semi-final vs Geelong Cats.

A straight-sets exit is genuinely on the table for a side that spent most of the year looking like the premiership favourite.

The Cats arrive with their own head of steam after ending Carlton's fairytale with a 107-74 win in front of a packed-out MCG. At 36, Patrick Dangerfield pulled out a vintage performance, with five goals and 21 disposals in a Danger classic.

History between these two in finals is thin. The last September meeting came in a 2013 qualifying final, which Fremantle won 87-72. This season they've split the ledger: Geelong took the Round 1 clash 110-100, before the Dockers responded with a 99-90 win in Round 15.

That sets up a semi-final where the pressure sits almost entirely on the home side. Fremantle earned a second chance by finishing on top, they now must prove they deserved it, in front of their home fans.

Head-to-Head Prediction

Chris Scott has already started the mind games, declaring his Cats hold no fear about travelling west to knock over the No. 1 seed. It's a free hit and he knows it.

For Justin Longmuir's men, this is about belief and boldness. They played timid footy last week and let Hawthorn's pressure paralyse them. The big three forwards were the clearest symptom, Josh Treacy, Jye Amiss and Patrick Voss combined for just two goals, and you'd imagine they need five between them to win this.

Jordan Clark provided drive; almost nobody else played with any dare or decisiveness. Bolton, Reid, Treacy, Amiss and Voss all saved their worst for the biggest stage. That can't happen twice.

The ruck battle looms large. Mark Blicavs and Mitch Edwards will try to quell Luke Jackson, who has posted 27 and 28 disposals in his two clashes with the Geelong rucks this season. He is more than a handful.

The other question is whether Dangerfield can back up his best-on-ground display. Age says no. His will might say otherwise.

Freo haven't won a final since 2022. This Geelong side has won three in twelve months, and finals footy does hit different, we saw exactly that with the Crows last season.

Will this be the end for the minor premiers, or can they rise to the occasion and compete against the finals’ mainstays that are Geelong.

We reckon Freo has another few gears left in them.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

Jye Amiss was held to 1.1 against Hawthorn in a performance he'd rather forget, and forwards of his quality tend not to string two of those together.

Fremantle's game needs their big athletic forward line to be dominant with the ball and Amiss will be desperate to prove this early.

The Dockers' midfield let down the locals last week, with Murphy Reid, Caleb Serong and Shai Bolton all producing some of their quietest games of the season.

That makes it hard to go past Bailey Smith here. He managed 27 in the rain against Carlton, which is a modest night by his standards, Bazlenka has posted some of the highest averages in the competition all season.

Win, lose or draw, he'll be heavily involved for the Cats.
