Collingwood Magpies vs Geelong Cats Prediction - Round 21 2026

28/07/2026|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

Sitting just two points apart on the AFL ladder, Collingwood and Geelong meet in a crucial matchup at the MCG to open Round 21 on Thursday.

These clubs have faced off once already in 2026 where the Cats demolished the Pies 122-68 back in Round 9.

Bailey Smith was on a mission that day, finishing with 40 disposals, 14 score involvements and three goal assists in one of the performances of the year.

Collingwood will remember that result, and so will Nick Daicos.

More recently, Geelong proved once again that you count them out at your peril. The Cats beat Melbourne 117-97 on Friday night to become the first side to defeat the Dees at the MCG in 2026.

Oisin Mullin played a critical role, shutting down Kysaiah Pickett and letting the Geelong midfield run free.

Collingwood, meanwhile, have been on a tear. Six wins straight after beating the Crows 108-74 in Adelaide last Thursday. Daicos finished with 39 disposals, 10 score involvements and a goal, and that was against a side that knew exactly what it needed to do to stop him.

Both clubs desperately need this result. Lose, and a Wildcard Weekend game is almost certainly on the agenda.

Collingwood Magpies vs Geelong Cats Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

The clash of the round is the opener. Scorching Pies against relentless Cats, and neither side is cooling off.

Collingwood are airborne thanks to Nick Daicos and some timely cameos in the forward line. Dan McStay deserves a mention too, a player hitting career-best form who keeps showing up at the right moments.

Geelong have been written off a few times this season. Their win over the Dees puts paid to that again. A premiership team? Probably not. But fully writing them off is a fool's errand.

The Pies' attack from half-back is back. That's what catapulted them to the 2023 premiership and something of that old magic has returned through Crisp, Daicos and Daicos, Pendlebury, Lipinski and De Goey.

Shannon Neale bagged five last week and his physical presence will give Billy Frampton a serious workout in the goal square. The winner clings onto some hope of fourth. The loser books a Wildcard Weekend game.

Head-to-head prediction: Geelong Cats by seven points.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

Shannon Neale is in the form of his life right now. Five goals against the Dees last week, and his marking presence inside 50 is at a level that makes him a genuine threat to get the opening score on Thursday.

With Geelong looking to impose themselves from the first bounce and Neale the focal point of their forward structure, this is a straightforward selection.

Betting tip: Shannon Neale first goal scorer.

Most Disposals Prediction

Nick Daicos. The AFL’s favourite son.

Thirty-nine touches against Adelaide last week, 39 the week before and he's been doing this all season. The MCG gives him even more room to move and Geelong will need to throw bodies at him to have any chance of slowing him down.

The subplot worth watching is Bailey Smith right behind him. Smith vs Allan in the middle of the MCG on a Thursday night is the kind of matchup that shapes seasons. Both could push 35 touches. We're taking Daicos at the top.

Betting tip: Nick Daicos most disposals.

AFL Same Game Multi Tips

Betting tip: Tim Membrey 2+ Goals / Bailey Smith Under Disposals  / Jordan De Goey 22+ Disposals / Over Total Match Points.
