UFC 289 Tips

Marc-Andre Barriault vs Eryk Anders

The French-Canadian Marc-Andre Barriault kicks things off in Vancouver with a middleweight clash against UFC veteran Eryk “Ya Boi” Anders.

The “Power Barr” (Barriault) is hoping for a big win in front of a Canadian home crowd but given his recent form there’s definitely cause for concern. Since his 2019 UFC debut, he’s gone 4-4-1 with some losses against what should be considered weaker competition.

Eryk Anders is coming off a big win against Kyle Daukaus in what was arguably his best performance to date. He picked apart Daukaus the whole fight and earned a KO win in the 2nd to break a 2-loss streak.

This is the most even match up on the card and all signs are pointing towards a split decision win for either fighter. The smart moneys on the fight to go the distance but if you were to pick one to get his hand raised you would have to go the way of the Power Barr.

Tip: Fight to go the Distance and/or Marc-Andre Barriault to Win via Decision

Dan Ige vs Nate Landwehr

Next up we’ve got a battle of the featherweights as Dan Ige & Nate Landwehr meet in the Octagon with different goals in mind. Ige will be looking to solidify his #13 rank in the featherweight division while Landwehr is hoping to crack the top 15 and move one step closer to UFC glory.

The featherweight division is jam-packed right now with well rounded fighters and Dan Ige knows that more than most – he’s 2-4 in his last 6 bouts with all 4 of his losses coming to fighters who now sit above him in the rankings. While this is cause for concern if you’re an Ige fan, we still think he’s got the arsenal to take this one home.

Landwehr has been on a hot streak with recent wins over Dovid Onama & Austin Lingo but he’s yet to face a fighter the calibre of Ige. If you placed Nate Landwehr against the same fighters that Dan Ige has faced in his last 6, he’d be sitting on 0-6.

Ige has the experience & skillset to get this done, the only question is when & how.

Tip: Dan Ige to Win

Mike Mallott vs Adam Fugitt

“Proper” Mike Mallott only has one speed and that’s fast. He’s got 9 wins to his name and every single one has come in the first round. His only time past the first round was a draw all the way back in 2015 when he was fighting at Bellator.

In the other corner we’ve got the 34-year-old Adam Fugitt who’s no stranger to an early finish. He holds a record of 9-3 with only 1 of his 9 wins coming via decision.

These two are going to come out swinging and it won’t last 5 minutes.

Tip: Fight to end in Round 1

Charles Oliveira vs Beneil Dariush

Da Bronx is back! Charles Oliveira returns to the Octagon to face Beneil Dariush in his first fight since losing the lightweight title to Islam Makhachev in October of last year, a loss that broke the Brazilians 11-fight win streak. It’s now up to Oliveira to chip away at the other top contenders and see if he can earn himself another shot at the belt.

Beneil Dariush is coming in on an 8-fight win streak and a win here will most likely earn him a shot at Makhachev and the coveted lightweight belt.

On paper Oliveira’s submission game is impeccable with 21 of his 33 wins coming via tap out, and while it looks good, Dariush poses the biggest BJJ threat in Oliveira’s career, potentially more so than Makhachev who managed to submit the Brazilian former champion.

Dariush has executed his Jiu Jitsu brilliantly against Tony Ferguson, Carlos Diego Ferreira, Thiago Moises and most recently Mateusz Gamrot. As long as Dariush can take it to the ground quickly, he’ll be able to dictate the fight.

Dariush has a glaring weakness and its his chin. He’s been caught a few times and it’s been a while since he’s faced a fighter with the striking capability of Charles Oliveira. If Da Bronx can keep it on the feet, then he stands a chance, but it’s a very small chance.

Tip: Beneil Dariush to win via Submission or Decision

Amanda Nunes vs Irene Aldana

After a shock loss to Julianna Pena in 2021 which saw her lose her Bantamweight title, Amanda Nunes is back with a vengeance. She reclaimed her title in July of last year and the “Lioness” impeccable run in the UFC continues. She now faces Mexican Irene Aldana who has stepped in after Julianna Pena was forced to withdraw from the much-anticipated trilogy fight due to a fractured rib.

Barring the loss to Pena, Amanda Nunes has always been 2 steps ahead in every division she’s fought in. She’s undoubtedly the best female fighter the UFC has ever seen and will hold that title for a long time to come. With full respect to Irena Aldana, Amanda Nunes has this fight in the bag.

Tip: Amanda Nunes to Win via KO
