Chile will enjoy home advantage in Santiago against Spain, the top seed that lost in last year’s final to Italy.

The Spaniards reached last year’s final without Carlos Alcaraz, and they may have to do so again as their star is still recovering from long-term injury – and experienced a gruelling US Open campaign at times before crashing out in an epic five-setter in the quarter-finals against American Ben Shelton.

Even so, the likes of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Jaume Munar are more than capable of carrying Spain to victory – and they won’t be inconvenienced by playing on clay, either.

Meanwhile, Germany will hope to have Alexander Zverev fit and firing.

He’s enjoying a breakout year in which he’s won the French Open and reached the final of Wimbledon; if available, Zverev will surely carry the Germans to at least two points against a solid but unspectacular Croatian team.

Belgium have an emerging star in Alexander Blockx, who followed an impressive clay court campaign with a run to the quarter finals of the US Open.

His presence could help the Belgians to overcome Austria in Vienna, but that could depend on his fitness after he was forced to withdraw through injury in New York.

Given the deep run of Shelton and Frances Tiafoe at the US Open, we’re still not sure who the United States pairing will be.

But they have strength in depth now with the likes of Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul, so should have the firepower to see off the Jiri Lehecka led Czechs.

Arguably the tie of the round is France’s trip to Quebec to take on Canada.

The French may be the higher seeds, but the Canadian duo of Felix Auger Aliassime and Gabriel Diallo could be strong in the singles on home soil.

Ecuador knocked out Australia in the first round, but their Davis Cup campaign may come to an end against Great Britain, who still have talent despite the absence of Jack Draper.

The curveball tie is South Korea vs India , with both teams unseeded.

Home advantage for the Koreans in Seoul, where they defeated a classy Argentina in the first round, could prove definitive.
