The final major tournament before the French Open, the ATP Masters 1000 Rome event will provide many of the world’s top players with an opportunity to make sure they are ready for the famous clay courts of Roland Garros.
The Italian Open will begin on May 6 (local time) for the ranked players in the ATP, with the final scheduled for May 17 (local time).
Quick Picks
Our pick: Sinner to win
Value bet: Musetti to win
Long shot: Cobolli to win
Betting Preview
This year’s competition will not involve Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic could be out, although Jannik Sinner is expected to be at his home event barring any setbacks.
The world number 1 will feel he’ll have a very good chance of winning this tournament without his main rivals in the field, as well as his positive record on clay courts.
He recently made the final four (as of writing) at the Madrid Open, while his record over the last 12 months on this surface is exceptional.
Prior to his semi-final clash against Arthur Fils in Madrid, Sinner was 20-2 over the last 52 weeks on clay.
His only defeats were against Alcaraz; one at this event last year and one in the French Open final (where Alcaraz won’t be participating because of injury).
Still, there’ll be other players whom he’ll have to be wary of. German Alexander Zverev and Australian Alex De Minaur will both be part of the field, both of whom enjoy clay courts.
Betting Markets to Watch
Sinner will be the expected favourite, but it’s likely that his odds won’t offer too much value when they are released.
However, with Alcaraz absent and Djokovic potentially absent, there could be value in Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti and Flavio Cobolli. These two individuals will be worth watching, as they both have impressive form on clay. Musetti is 16-6 over the last year, while Cobolli is 15-4. With some of the sport’s biggest players potentially missing, it could be a tournament in which they go far.
Zverev is another who cannot be counted out, as he won the ATP Masters 1000 Rome event in 2024. He is 17-6 on clay over the last 52 weeks, prior to his quarter-final match against Cobolli at the Madrid Open.
Our Prediction

Our prediction is that Sinner will likely win this event. He’s been unstoppable on clay and the only man to have done so in the past year won’t be playing.
We think there’ll be value in Musetti to do well, despite being shocked at the Madrid Open.
He was eliminated in the Round of 16, but reached the semi-finals of this event last year before being beaten by Alcaraz.
A long shot is Cobolli, as he has been performing consistently well recently, having reached the final in the ATP 500 in Munich.
