Germany vs Portugal Betting Tips: Will the Nations League goals flow?
Two talented teams that haven’t quite lived up to expectations in recent years have a chance of winning the UEFA Nations League in 2025.
But will Germany or Portugal get the job done? They meet in the semi-final on Thursday morning (05:00am AEST).
Key Info
Germany will have home advantage in this semi-final at the Allianz Arena in Munich. Will that prove vital?
Perhaps, but they had home field advantage at EURO 2024 last summer too, where they lost to eventual champions Spain in the quarter finals.
Portugal also bowed out of the competition at the same stage following a penalty shootout loss to France, but like Germany they have rebounded somewhat since.
Team Form
Since losing at EURO 2024, Germany have gone seven games unbeaten.
They’ve won three and also drawn with Italy on home soil, with the 5-4 aggregate victory over the Italians in the Nations League quarter-finals – courtesy of a 2-1 win in Milan and a 3-3 draw in Dortmund – the pick of the bunch.
Portugal have struggled on their travels since EURO 2024, tasting defeat in Denmark and drawing in Croatia and Scotland.
Thankfully for Roberto Martinez, their home form has been much better – winning four on the spin, including a 5-2 thrashing of Denmark in the second leg of their Nations League quarter final… but how much will that count for in Munich?
Tactics and Lineups
This is a functional and efficient German side under Julian Nagelsmann, who will set his team up in a nominal 4-3-3 shape; albeit one that will morph with and without the ball.
Jamal Musiala is the kingpin in a side that otherwise surprisingly lacks star power, although the central defensive partnership of Antonio Rudiger and Jonathan Tah is as secure as they come.
The lack of a natural goalscorer in Germany has seen Tim Kleindienst, the Borussia Monchengladbach striker, called up for international duty for the first time at 29.
Portugal will also adopt a 4-3-3 system, with Cristiano Ronaldo potentially starting through the middle.
The likes of Vitinha, Joao Neves and Nuno Mendes have enjoyed fine seasons with PSG, while Bruno Fernandes and Rafael Leao are match winners on their day.
Germany vs Portugal Betting Angles
Germany have been installed as the favourites on home soil in the Germany vs Portugal betting odds, but are they really a better team than the Portuguese?
They are a functional outfit for sure, but the Portuguese have more star quality and players that can win a game with a moment of magic – so Portugal hold appeal to win this game or, at least, take it into extra time.
The respective quarter finals for these teams saw eight and nine goals over two legs, with three of those games delivering Both Teams to Score and Over 2.5 Goals. A repeat in Munich is distinctly possible.
