Francesco Farioli's Porto are back in the Champions League after two seasons away and have made the most of a soft opening fixture list: 1-0 over Torreense in the Super Cup, then five Primeira Liga wins against Alverca, Rio Ave, Arouca, Viseu and Moreirense, 11 goals scored and one conceded.

Gabri Veiga has been the standout. The obvious caveat is that none of those sides will finish in the top half.

City's numbers look tidier than the football has been. Nine points from nine in the Premier League, but a 3-0 Community Shield loss to Arsenal, a 2-1 scrap with Bournemouth and a 1-0 over promoted Coventry on Saturday in which Gianluigi Donnarumma was the best player on the pitch. 

Erling Haaland's 300th career goal won it, his club record-breaking one.

Enzo Maresca's first Champions League game in charge follows six with Chelsea last autumn: three wins, two defeats, one of the wins a 3-0 over Barcelona.

Head to head favours City: three wins from four European meetings. The exception matters here, though. The one game played at the Dragao in this competition, December 2020, finished 0-0. Underdogs have also won four of City's last five Champions League Tuesday fixtures.

Porto vs Manchester City Team News

Porto lose two starters. Jan Bednarek serves a one-match ban carried over from the red card in last season's Europa League quarter-final against Nottingham Forest, so Nehuen Perez partners Jakub Kiwior at centre-back.

Victor Froholdt is out after being knocked unconscious against Moreirense. Samu Aghehowa is a long-term ACL absentee. Expect Diogo Costa in goal, Pablo Rosario and Veiga in midfield, and Andre Silva leading the line with William Gomes and Pepe wide.

City are without Jeremy Doku (calf), and Nico O'Reilly is a serious doubt after a back injury in the warm-up on Saturday.

That injury pushed record signing Enzo Fernandez into an early debut. Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo and Phil Foden should support Haaland, who sits on 57 Champions League goals from 58 games and needs three more to beat Messi's record pace to 60. 

It is a chase that keeps the Norwegian firmly in the conversation among the greatest goalscorers in the game.

The Manchester derby comes four days later, which is a rotation question Maresca will have to answer.

The double chance and draw-no-bet markets are where the contrarian case lives, given City's away record in this competition.

Goals markets lean the other way: Over Goals has landed in 13 of City's last 15 Champions League away matches, and both teams have scored in seven of Porto's last eight matchday-one games. A Porto goal and a City goal in a game neither side wins is a very live combination.

Porto or the draw. City have won two of their last nine Champions League away games, they're missing Doku and probably O'Reilly, the manager is new to the job, and the derby against United is on Sunday.

Porto haven't lost, haven't conceded more than once in a game, and have the crowd. The risk is obvious: City have the two best players on the pitch in Haaland and Donnarumma, and Porto's perfect start was built against sides that won't trouble anyone.

A 1-1 draw looks the most likely single result, with Porto's goal coming from a set piece or Veiga running at a City midfield that's still learning its shape.
