The Tillies are back in action!

This Friday, Australia’s favourite national sporting team will be back in front of another sold-out crowd when they host South American powerhouse Argentina.

It’s the first of four end-of-season-friendlies for the Aussie women with two matches against Argentina, followed by two against Slovenia later in June.

These matches are crucial for the Matildas as they continue to slightly rejuvenate their squad and play pool as they tick closer and closer to their next major tournament - the Asian Cup, which will be hosted on home soil early in 2026.

It’s a critical time for the Matildas too as they remain in a state of flux over their coaching situation. For all the talk of who the new person in charge will be, there’s been no formal action taken and the days and camps with all the players are getting smaller and smaller.

Can they continue to blood some youth, add some depth to their already impressive player pool, and remind Australians and women’s football fans just how good this team is? Let’s find out!

Matildas vs Argentina Preview

How do we assess this group of Matildas?

Among the 23-player squad, several players have returned to the national team after long-term injury layoffs (Amy Sayer & Jada Whyman) while others have earned recalls following a strong body of work at club level (Isabel Gomex & Bryleeh Henry.

There is one maiden call-up to the national team (Khali Johnson) while the squad now boasts three European champions with the Tillies Arsenal trio (Caitlin Foord, Steph Catley & Kyra Cooney-Cross) coming off a victory over Barcelona over the weekend.

Then there is Sam Kerr. The injured skipper remains a ‘camp-by-camp’ proposition as she has elected to complete a full pre-season at Chelsea before returning to International football.

As alluded to, while there are still plenty of stars and household names such as Foord, Catley, Cooney-Cross, Grant, Heyman, Hunt, and Kennedy in the squad, there are plenty of new faces looking to make a name for themselves. Not just to the coaching staff, but in the hearts and minds of Australian fans.

Matildas vs Argentina Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction (H2H)

The Matildas have slipped down to 16th in the FIFA rankings. Despite getting back on the winners list with a pair of unconvincing victories against South Korea in their last batch of friendlies, fans are still waiting to be convinced of a form turnaround after losing all three of their matches in the SheBelieves Cup held earlier this year.

Argentina is ranked 33rd and is coming off a win and a draw against Chile in their last FIFA window back in February.

While it is the end of the season, playing at home, in front of another sold-out stadium will give those in the green and gold the confidence to go out there and put on a show.

With the large supportive army behind them, we’re backing the Matildas to get the job done here in fine style.

First Goal

It’s been hard for the Matildas to find the firepower up front in the absence of the legendary Kerr. Luckily for interim coach Tom Sermani, He has someone in his team who has a pretty good memory of Marvel Stadium the last time the Tillies took there last year.

Striker Michelle Heyman netted a 12-minute hattrick on her way to a four-goal first half as the Tillies romped to a 10-0 win over Uzbekistan.

We’re backing the Canberra United striker to lead the line & open the scoring once again.

Betting tip: Michelle Heyman

Correct Score

The Tillies are lucky to have their defensive generals Clare Hunt, Steph Catley, and Alanna Kennedy in for this camp. The retirement of Clare Polkinghorne has opened the door for someone to come in and fill the void. But, with Hunt and Kennedy there, you’re feeling safe with the back wall set there in front of shot-stopper Teagan Micah.

We don’t think it will rain goals like it did last time the Matildas played at Marvel Stadium, but we do think they will find their groove and make it a comfortable night.

Betting tip: 2-0 Australia
