Two of Ligue 1’s biggest underperformers this season, Marseille and PSG would have expected to find themselves towards the top of the table rather than further down it. However, neither side has had a great start to the campaign, with both among the favourites to win the title.

Having had their struggles in the summer, Marseille’s start under Bruno Génésio hasn’t been as fruitful as the club in the south of France would have liked.

Having won their first game of the season, they’ve since gone on a run of three consecutive defeats, including last weekend's 1-0 loss to Rennes which left them down in 13th in the table.

The club started well with a 4-0 win against Strasbourg, but have since failed to score a goal in two of their three defeats, with two goals conceded against Paris FC (3-2 loss) either side of a 2-0 defeat to Monaco and the loss to Rennes.

Perhaps more shocking is the form of PSG. Luis Enrique’s side have been known to dominate the league from the first to final game of the season, but this campaign has started off a little differently.

While things have picked up more recently, the champions began their title defence with two draws and a defeat before picking up their first three points last weekend.

Two 2-2 draws were recorded away at Rennes and current table-toppers LOSC Lille, with both needing late efforts to salvage a point. Ferran Torres scored a double against Rennes, while stoppage-time goals saved PSG’s blushes against Lille.

A 1-0 victory over Brest followed their 2-1 defeat to Monaco, their only home Ligue 1 game so far.

Betting Markets to Watch

PSG are huge favourites to win; Marseille are in poor form while PSG appear to be building on what they have done best for more than a decade.

The H2H record between these two in Ligue 1 also heavily favours the Parisians. They have won seven of the last eight meetings played, with Marseille winning one.

That victory did come last season at the Stade Velodrome, albeit through a fifth-minute own-goal by Marquinhos. Still, it’s not a common result, which is why many can’t see anything else but a PSG win here.

French soccer appears to have a habit of producing large scorelines, with the ‘Over 2.5 Goals ’ market tending to hit. Across the eight combined games played between these two teams, it has hit five times (three in four for PSG) – and we think it’s likely to hit again, as both have found it hard to keep the ball out of their nets.

By extension, we think there may be better value in the BTTS not hitting, as six of the eight Ligue 1 meetings have seen a clean sheet.
