The Socceroos once again find themselves in all too familiar “now or never” territory ahead of their two World Cup Qualifiers this month.

If they want any hope of directly qualifying for next year’s World Cup, they need to collect maximum points in their next two games, starting here against Indonesia.

There’s already been plenty of talk around the squad selected for these upcoming qualifiers and it will be interesting to see how Australia approach this opening match from a tactical standpoint.

For the latest analysis, team news, odds and more ahead of this must win World Cup Qualifier, check out our Socceroos vs Indonesia prediction and preview below.

Who is in the Socceroos Team?

Tony Popovic has named his extended 26-man squad that will represent Australia against Indonesia and China PR in the two upcoming World Cup Qualifiers.

While there are plenty of familiar faces returning to the Green and Gold fold, there are a total of six players named who are currently uncapped.

For four of them, this marks their first time being called up to the senior national team, with Popovic deciding the time is right for Alex Grant (Sydney FC), Ryan Teague (Melbourne Victory FC), Kai Trewin (Melbourne City FC) and Nectarios Triantis (Hibernian FC) to all get a taste of the big time.

You can see the full Socceroos squad for the upcoming games against Indonesia and China PR below.

Socceroos vs Indonesia Preview

The general consensus from fans and pundits alike, is that it’s an odd squad from Popovic and his backroom staff.

Naturally he’s picked many of his favourites, but that still doesn’t justify the exclusion of names like Balard, Milanovic, Botic and most notably, Irankunda.

Australia’s centre half stocks are also decimated right now, so the pressure will be on a new combination of likely: Burgess, Rowles and Geria to lock it down at the back.

Luckily Indonesia aren’t renowned for their lethal attacking prowess, so whoever is selected back there should be able to hold their own. Its future matches against greater opposition which is the concern.

The midfield is where the most promise lies. Jackson Irvine currently plays for and captains a Bundesliga side so he’s a lock. His pivot partner is still very much up for grabs though. Aiden O’Neill has been there before, and also currently captains a European side, but young Nectarios Traintis is currently knocking on the door, hard.

We expect Goodwin to provide most of the width on Thursday night and hopefully help supply the ammo for either Taggart or Yengi.

Socceroos vs Indonesia Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head (H2H)

It’s no surprise that the Socceroos are the overwhelming favourites in the H2H market.

Indonesia are minnows in the world of football and have never successfully qualified for a World Cup.

Australia also have home ground advantage here and currently paying 1.36 (at the time of writing) anything other than a convincing victory will be seen as a failure.

Betting tip: Australia.

First Goal

Craig Goodwin has been one of the undisputed stars of the national team in recent years.

His set piece prowess coupled with his ability to arrive late into the box, beat players with the ball at his feet and score from range makes him a constant goal threat.

That’s why we’re backing him to break the deadlock here with one of those trademark screamers.

Betting tip: Craig Goodwin.

Correct Score

Australia are expected to win this one easily and we do think that will be the case. However, we doubt this will be the five plus goal landslide we would have once anticipated.

The lack of bite up top for the Socceroos leads us to believe we will see a more measured approach from Popovic’s side as opposed to all-out attack.

Still, against a nation currently ranked 127th in the world, a convincing win should be on the cards.

Betting tip: 3-0 Australia.
