Women’s football has ascended to one of the most popular sports in Australia, largely thanks to the exploits of many of our Matildas.

A new generation of green and gold clad idols have announced themselves not just to Australia, but to the world.

When our girls aren’t representing their country, they are plying their trade for some of the top clubs overseas, particularly in the Women’s Super League (WSL).

Not only do we have a number of Australian representatives playing in England’s top flight, we have a number of them dominating it.

Names like Sam Kerr, Mary Fowler and Steph Catley have quickly become household names in England and there are a number of other Aussie girls on the precipice of similar superstardom.

It’s not every day you get this many local heroes playing in one of the biggest leagues of one of the biggest sports on the planet.

When you do, you simply have to take a moment to pay homage. So that’s what we’ve done. Come with us as we take a look at all the Aussies currently playing in the Women’s Super League in 2025.

Aussies in the WSL 2025

Sam Kerr (Chelsea)

Easily the most recognisable name on this list, Sam Kerr is not just one of the best players in Australia, she is one of the best in the entire world.

Kerr plays for perennial WSL powerhouse Chelsea where she has to date scored 59 goals in 76 WSL appearances, won two Golden Boots and five league titles.

In 2023, Kerr was runner up in the Ballon d’Or Feminin, meaning she was one step removed from being officially named the best female footballer on the planet.

The 32-year-old striker recently returned from a devastating ACL injury that kept her sidelined for 20 months, scoring her 100th goal in all competitions for the Blues.

Mary Fowler (Manchester City)

Easily the biggest rising star in Australian football at the moment, Mary Fowler continues to go from strength-to-strength.

She has established herself as a key cog in both the Matildas and Manchester City machines. She is also one half of Aussie sports latest power couple, with NRL ace Nathan Cleary.

With her current trajectory in the WSL, it’s hard to see Mary Fowler going anywhere other than the very top.

Ellie Carpenter (Chelsea)

After a wildly successful five-year stint with French giants Lyon that yielded four league titles and two Champions Leagues, Australian superstar Ellie Carpenter signed for Chelsea in the WSL.

One of the Matildas’ biggest assets, it’s no surprise Chelsea snapped up Carpenter as soon as they could.

She has made 84 appearances for the Tillies already despite still only being 25 years of age.

If her recent debut for the Blues is anything to go by, the sky is the limit for Ellie in London and she could form a lethal combination with Sam Kerr, just as she has done at international level for Australia.

Caitlin Foord (Arsenal)

After bursting onto the scene for the Matildas at age 16, 13 years later Caitlin Foord now finds herself at one of the biggest clubs in the WSL.

When she became the youngest Australian to ever play at a world cup as well as winning Young Player of the Tournament in 2011, it was clear that Foord was destined for the very top.

After a globe-trotting career to date which has included stints Down Under, in Japan and the US, the Aussie forward now finds herself a mainstay on the red side of North London.

Steph Catley (Arsenal)

The Aussie influence continues at Arsenal, with versatile defender Steph Catley also on the Gunners books.

Like Foord she signed on in 2020 and has gone on to make 84 appearances for the club so far.

Capable of playing anywhere in the backline, Catley was named Australia’s PFA Women’s Player of the Year in 2020 and is a key part of the Tillies still to this day.

Kyra Cooney-Cross (Arsenal)

Completing the hat-trick of Aussies at Arsenal is midfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross. After impressing for Hammarby IF in Sweden, Cooney-Cross moved to North London in 2023.

The 23-year-old Matilda quickly established herself in the middle for the Gunners and has made 33 appearances and counting in all competitions.

Charlotte Grant (Tottenham)

Ange Postecoglou may have left Tottenham Hotspur, but there is still an Aussie or two in North London that wear white.

One of those is 23-year-old defender Charlotte Grant. Signing on for Spurs at the start of 2024, Grant has slowly but surely worked her way into the first team and looks primed to have a big future in the WSL.

Clare Hunt (Tottenham)

Joining Charlotte Grant at Spurs is fellow Aussie Clare Hunt. Signing six months after Grant, Hunt was previously at French giants Paris St Germain before her switch to North London.

Despite playing as a centre-back, she has already scored twice in 17 appearances, with both goals coming against Liverpool.

Alanna Kennedy (London City)

Able to play in both the backline and the midfield, the super versatile Alanna Kennedy has been playing the Women’s Super League for the past five years.

First with Tottenham Hotspur and then with Manchester City and now with the London City Lionesses, Kennedy has more than 50 WSL appearances to her name.

On the international stage she has been a stalwart of the Matildas side, earning 139 caps and counting, since debuting in 2012 aged just 19.

Clare Wheeler (Everton)

Originally joining the Toffees on loan in 2022, Wheeler impressed the higher ups at Everton enough to convince them to sign her on a permanent basis.

At age 27 and entering the prime of her career, Wheeler has started becoming a regular for the Tillies and even made her maiden Olympics appearance for the Green and Gold this year in Paris.

Katrina Gorry (West Ham)

While most of the Aussie contingent in the Women’s Super League in 2025 are still in the first half of their careers, Katrina Gorry is here to show a Green and Gold veteran can still mix it up at the highest level.

Despite playing for nine different clubs throughout her career, Gorry’s current spell at West Ham United is her first for a WSL club.

Joining the Hammers at the start of 2024, it wasn’t long before the experienced midfielder was named captain of the club.

Charlize Rule (Brighton)

From one of the most experienced Matildas to one of the least, Brighton and Hove Albion defender Charlize Rule has to date only made a solitary appearance for her country.

That is largely due to age and injury. The 23-year-old signed for Brighton in 2023, but missed all of 2024 through injury.

Now fully fit and finding her feet, Charlize is ready to Rule the WSL along with her fellow compatriots.
