Muharemović Leeds Transfer Nears Club-Record A$65m Deal

Leeds United are on the brink of one of the biggest signings in their modern history, with the Muharemović Leeds transfer closing in as Bosnia and Herzegovina centre-back Tarik Muharemović nears a move from Sassuolo.

Multiple reports, including confirmation from the well-connected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, put the fee at roughly €40m, or about A$65 million, in what would rank as the second-most expensive purchase the club has ever made.

The 23-year-old is expected to sign a contract running until 2031, tying his prime years to Elland Road.

Muharemović arrives with genuine pedigree. He started three of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s four World Cup matches this year (he was suspended for the final group game against Qatar after being sent off against Switzerland), and last season he appeared in 32 Serie A matches for Sassuolo following their promotion from Serie B.

How the Muharemović Leeds Transfer Unfolded

The pursuit accelerated quickly. According to reports, Juventus were themselves weighing a move for their former academy product before the Premier League came calling again, and it is easy to see why Sassuolo were tempted to cash in on a fee of this size. That willingness to sell reflects the scale of interest that had built around the player.

Di Marzio wrote that Muharemović was set to join Leeds for around 40 million euros with the final details being ironed out. Other reports indicate the bulk of that figure is guaranteed up front, with little reliance on the sort of performance-based add-ons that can inflate a headline number.

The deal would sit just behind the club-record signing of striker Georginio Rutter, who arrived from Hoffenheim in January 2023 for £35.5m (approximately €40m, or roughly A$65 million).

Juventus Sell-On Clause Explained

There is a familiar twist in this transfer too, because another club stands to profit handsomely.

Juventus signed the Ljubljana-born defender on a free transfer from Wolfsberger AC back in 2021, then sold him to Sassuolo for approximately €5m (about A$8 million) in April 2025 after a promotion-winning loan in Serie B. That relatively low sale price now looks like a bargain given how the transaction has unfolded.

Crucially, Turin retained a 50 per cent sell-on clause. That means roughly half of the reported €40m fee, somewhere around A$33 million, would flow straight back to Juventus, money the Italian giants reportedly need to fund their own transfer plans.

What Muharemović Brings to Leeds

Scouting reports describe him as physically robust and strong in aerial duels, with good game-reading ability.

The numbers back that up, with the Yorkshire Evening Post noting he averaged 10.86 defensive contributions per 90 minutes last season, comfortably above Pascal Struijk’s 9.07 for Leeds the year before.

He is rated highly as a modern defender—someone who reads danger well and is comfortable stepping forward to join attacks when the opportunity arises. At six foot four, he has the physicality Leeds need at the back, especially after losing Struijk to Brighton.

Most people seem to believe this is a statement signing, and it is hard to argue otherwise.

Leeds are paying big money for a player who performed well in Serie A and showed he can handle the pressure of a World Cup. Whether he can make the same impact in the faster, more physical Premier League remains to be seen, but the intent is clear.

For A$65 million, Leeds are betting on his potential rather than just his current level. At 23, he should have his best years ahead of him, and if the move works out, it could look like shrewd business in a few seasons. If it does not, well - that is the risk you take when you are trying to build something.
