Why Cardiff and Not Wembley

Wembley is booked for concerts across that weekend, so the FA moved its season opener to the Principality Stadium.

It's the first time the Community Shield has been played in Cardiff since 2006, when the ground was still known as the Millennium Stadium, and only the third time the fixture has been staged away from Wembley since the new stadium opened in 2007.

The roof is the interesting part. The Principality Stadium is one of the few venues in Britain that can close over the top, which takes weather out of the equation and typically produces a louder, quicker match than an open bowl.

How Arsenal and Man City Qualified

Arsenal are here as Premier League champions. Mikel Arteta's side ended a 22-year wait for the title in 2025/26, their first since the 2003/04 season, and they got there ahead of City. They also reached the Champions League final, losing to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties after a 1-1 draw in May.

City qualified as FA Cup winners, beating Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley on 16 May. That's the route the Community Shield sets up: league champions against cup winners, and when one club wins both, the league runner-up fills the spot.

Format: Straight to Penalties

If the score is level after 90 minutes there's no extra time. The match goes directly to a penalty shoot-out.

These two have already done exactly that. The 2023 Community Shield finished 1-1 and Arsenal took the shoot-out 4-1, so a repeat isn't hard to picture.
