Spain vs Portugal Prediction - World Cup Round of 16
06/07/2026|SB Staff|World Cup 2026 Tips & Predictions
After riding their luck against Croatia and seeing a late goal against them be disallowed, Portugal sealed their place in the Round of 16, where they’ll face their geographic neighbours, Spain.
Luis de la Fuente’s side had a much easier route to this phase of the tournament, brushing Austria aside in a comfortable 3-0 win.
They dominated the game and looked like one of the teams to beat in this year’s competition, which could give Roberto Martinez’s side some trouble on Tuesday, July 7, at 05:00 AEST.
To celebrate the momentous occasion that is the World Cup, Sportsbet is bringing back its exclusive Super Sub feature!
How does Super Sub work? Well, it’s very simple. Place a bet on select player markets throughout the Men’s World Cup and if that player is subbed off your bet rolls over to the new player that replaced them.
For example, if you’ve bet on Kylian Mbappe to score during one of France’s matches and during that match he fails to do so and is directly substituted for Jean-Philippe Mateta who ends up scoring instead, your original bet on Mbappe is paid as a winner!
Super Sub is not exclusive to goalscoring markets either, it also applies to anytime assist, player to win one or more fouls, shots on target and more, just make sure to read all the T&Cs before locking in your bet.
Quick Picks
Our pick: Spain to qualify
Value bet: Mikel Oyarzabal as an anytime goalscorer
Long shot: Draw 1-1 correct score 90 mins
Portugal vs Spain prediction
This encounter could be one of the most interesting of the Round of 16s to have been set, with both feeling they have a legitimate chance of winning the contest. On paper, both have squads that are deep with quality and have arguably gotten better as the competition has progressed.
However, the early moneyline odds suggest that there is only one team that is the most likely to win: Spain. As our Spain vs Portugal betting odds page shows, De La Fuente’s La Roja are moderate favourites in the odds, although we think there could be better value in the ‘Draw’ if betting on 90 minutes.
Three of Spain's last four tournament knockout-stage matches have ended in a draw at the end of regulation time.
Martinez’s side can make things extremely tough, and the rivalry that they have could make this a very tricky encounter when they meet in Dallas in Match 93 of the competition.
As a result, we think there’s a “safer” value in the ‘To qualify for the Next Round’ market, with Spain our likely winners.
Spain in Extra Time offers value.
Portugal vs Spain score prediction
Given the quality of both nations, we think there won’t be too many goals in this game. We’re expecting a tight game between them, with the possibility that extra time is needed (or even penalties if they cannot be separated after 120 minutes).
We think the ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ market has the better value compared to the over, as both teams have been able to keep rather tight throughout the competition. Additionally, the 'Under 2.5 Goals' market has hit in seven of Spain's last eight tournament knockout-stage matches outside of their own region.
The 'Both Teams to Score' market has hit in four of Spain's five previous competition day Round of 16 matches, which is why we think there’s value here. By extension, we think there’s value in the 1-1 correct score after 90 minutes. Two of Spain's last three tournament Round of 16 day matches have finished this way, thus forcing additional time.
For shorter value, 0-0 at halftime could be worth exploring. The half-time scoreline has been this in six of Spain's last seven Knockout Stage matches outside of its own region.
Spain vs Portugal team news and line-ups
Predicted Spain line-up (4-3-3): Unai Simon, Pedro Porro, Robin Le Normand, Dean Huijsen, Marc Cucurella, Pedri, Martin Zubimendi, Fabian Ruiz, Lamine Yamal, Mikel Oyarzabal, Nico Williams.
De la Fuente has shifted La Roja towards a vertical, high-tempo approach built on quick transitions and wide forwards stretching defences, and the base shape flips to a 4-2-3-1 at times.
Nico Williams is expected to miss out with a fitness problem, Lamine Yamal faces a late fitness test on limited training, Pedro Porro faces a late fitness test on limited training, Dani Olmo faces a late fitness test on limited training, while Aymeric Laporte faces a late fitness test on limited training.
Predicted Portugal line-up (4-2-3-1): Diogo Costa, Nelson Semedo, Ruben Dias, Goncalo Inacio, Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Joao Neves, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Pedro Neto, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo has a minor injury and is not expected to tinker with a winning formula, with the only genuine selection debate coming on the right of the attack. Cristiano Ronaldo returns from suspension.
Player markets to watch
Both nations have players who can make a big difference when going forward, but two are perhaps the most notable: Cristiano Ronaldo and Mikel Oyarzabal.
CR7 scored his first-ever knockout goal in the tournament for his country from the penalty spot against Croatia and value as an anytime goalscorer as he looks to kick on. Although he appears to have struggled a little, he has scored at least one goal in three of Portugal's last four tournament matches played in the day.
In contrast, Oyarzabal has been playing well. The Spaniard netted twice against Austria in their Round of 32 contest, taking his total to four for the tournament. He has anytime value, as he has scored at least one goal in six of Spain's last eight matches, including qualifiers.
Marc Cucurella has value in the ‘To Score or Assist’ market, as does Bruno Fernandes. The Spaniard got his first two assists against Austria and could look to get down the wings against Portugal once again. Fernandes has an assist, but he’ll likely play a role as he is a big-game player.
