Iran vs New Zealand Prediction

10/06/2026|SB Staff|World Cup 2026 Tips & Predictions

Two sides with very different World Cup pedigrees collide when Iran take on New Zealand in their group-stage opener.

Team Melli arrive as one of Asia's most consistent qualifiers, blending European-based experience with the cutting edge of Mehdi Taremi up front.

Amir Ghalenoei's side have come into the tournament off the back of four wins in their last five, and they will fancy their chances of getting three points on the board early.

The All Whites, meanwhile, dominated qualifying in the OFC, winning all five of its fixtures while scoring 5.8 goals per match – highest average of any nation – led by the aforementioned Chris Wood and his nine goals.

While Wood remains the focal point, he is supported by Kosta Barbarouses and a hungry supporting cast, which includes cult hero turned viral social media star Tim Payne.

New Zealand know a fast start is essential if they are to push for a knockout berth.

Meanwhile, Iran qualified thanks to an 11-4-1 W/D/L record in the AFC, across which Mehdi Taremi was phenomenal, finishing with 10 goals and seven assists.

These nations have never met at the World Cup Finals, due in part to the fact New Zealand will only be making its third appearance at the tournament, the latest of which came in 2010.

The All Whites will be searching for their first World Cup Finals victory, While Iran is making its fourth straight appearance and seventh overall, however, the nation is still looking to get past the Group Stage for the first time.

Also, to celebrate the momentous occasion that is the 2026 World Cup, Sportsbet is bringing back its exclusive Super Sub feature!

How does Super Sub work? Well, it’s very simple. Place a bet on select player markets throughout the Men’s World Cup and if that player is subbed off your bet rolls over to the new player that replaced them.

For example, if you’ve bet on Kylian Mbappe to score during one of France’s matches and during that match he fails to do so and is directly substituted for Jean-Philippe Mateta who ends up scoring instead, your original bet on Mbappe is paid as a winner!

Super Sub is not exclusive to goalscoring markets either, it also applies to anytime assist, player to win one or more fouls, shots on target and more, just make sure to read all the T&Cs before locking in your bet.

Now, back to the action! For the latest betting tips and analysis ahead of this Group G game at the 2026 World Cup, check out our Iran vs New Zealand tips and predictions below.

Iran vs New Zealand Predictions and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

Iran shape as deserved favourites at $1.85, and there is genuine value in siding with Team Melli at the top of the card.

Their qualifying form has been built on a settled defensive structure, and the attacking trio of Taremi, Mohammad Mohebi and Ali Alipour offers a level of top-flight European nous that New Zealand will find difficult to contain over 90 minutes.

The All Whites have momentum from qualifying, but stepping up to World Cup opposition with this much technical quality is a different test entirely. Iran's experience on the biggest stage tips the scales.

Betting tip: Iran.

Correct Score Prediction

Tight, controlled and low scoring is how Iran tend to operate at major tournaments, and the under 2.5 goals line sitting at $1.55 reinforces that read.

A 1-0 result to Iran is paying $5.50, which looks the most realistic correct score on the board given the defensive discipline both teams have shown in recent outings.

New Zealand will sit deep, frustrate, and force Iran to break them down, while Taremi or Mohebi only needs one chance to settle it. A grinding, scrappy win is the way this preview shapes up.

Betting tip: 1-0 Iran.

First Goal Prediction

Mehdi Taremi is the obvious focal point of Iran's attack and is priced at $5.00 to open the scoring, the shortest quote in the first goalscorer market.

The former Porto striker has been involved in goals across his last five appearances and remains Team Melli's go-to man inside the box.

With New Zealand likely to invite pressure, set pieces and cut backs into the area should fall his way.

There is real value in taking Taremi to break the deadlock, especially given how often he gets on the end of Iran's first meaningful chance.

Betting tip: Mehdi Taremi.
