Ghana vs Panama Prediction

17/06/2026|SB Staff|World Cup 2026 Tips & Predictions

Ghana take on Panama at BMO Field in Toronto in one of Group L's opening fixtures on June 17, 2026. This one shapes up as the match both sides have circled in red.

With England and Croatia looming in the other group fixtures, this is realistically the best shot either team has at banking three points.

Ghana arrive as slight favourites but in genuinely woeful form, winless across their recent run and shipping goals for fun.

Panama are the plucky underdogs making just their second ever World Cup appearance, still chasing that elusive first tournament win.

The loss of Mohammed Kudus to a season-ending quadriceps injury is massive for the Black Stars.

He was their chief creator, the link between midfield and attack, and replacing that output is no small ask. Mohammed Salisu is also missing, while Thomas Partey has been denied entry to Canada and will miss the match. That's three huge absences.

Panama have their own concerns. Adalberto Carrasquilla is dealing with a left leg injury sustained in late May, though he was named in Panama's squad. That's still a worry given he's arguably their most important player.

Neither side has kept a clean sheet in recent outings. Ghana conceded ten goals across their recent friendlies, including losses to Austria (5-1), Germany (2-1), and Mexico (2-0). Panama qualified by topping CONCACAF Group A but have shown defensive fragility in recent matches. The defensive frailty on both sides is hard to ignore.

To celebrate the momentous occasion that is the World Cup, Sportsbet is bringing back its exclusive Super Sub feature!

How does Super Sub work? Well, it’s very simple. Place a bet on select player markets throughout the Men’s World Cup and if that player is subbed off your bet rolls over to the new player that replaced them.

For example, if you’ve bet on Kylian Mbappe to score during one of France’s matches and during that match he fails to do so and is directly substituted for Jean-Philippe Mateta who ends up scoring instead, your original bet on Mbappe is paid as a winner!

Super Sub is not exclusive to goalscoring markets either, it also applies to anytime assist, player to win one or more fouls, shots on target and more, just make sure to read all the T&Cs before locking in your bet.

Ghana vs Panama Prediction

Ghana to win in a tight, low-scoring affair is where we land.

Despite the poor recent form, there's a quality gap in attacking personnel. Antoine Semenyo has had a strong Premier League season with Bournemouth, Iñaki Williams brings relentless running, and Jordan Ayew offers big-match experience up front.

That trio should have enough to unlock a Panama defence that was largely tested against modest CONCACAF opposition.

But this is a World Cup opener between two teams who simply cannot afford to lose. Panama under Thomas Christiansen are well-drilled and disciplined, and they will sit deep and make life uncomfortable.

The tournament context screams caution from both sides.

Tight, nervy opening World Cup matches between unfamiliar opponents almost always produce fewer goals than the form guide suggests.

Both coaches know a point here is better than nothing, and that conservative mindset should keep the goal count down.

We are backing Ghana to win the match as our primary pick. As our Ghana vs Panama betting odds page shows, the Black Stars carry more firepower even without Kudus and Partey, and the pressure of needing a result from this fixture should drive them forward.

Pair that with under 2.5 goals, because the tactical incentives and tournament tension point strongly toward a narrow, cagey contest. A 1-0 or 2-1 Ghana victory feels like the most likely script.

Player markets to watch

Our pick: Antoine Semenyo to score anytime.

With Kudus out and Partey absent, Semenyo becomes Ghana's most dangerous attacking weapon.

He's been in strong form for Bournemouth and carries genuine goal threat from wide areas.

Expect him to be heavily involved in everything positive Ghana produce going forward, and he shapes as the most likely Black Star to find the net.

Our pick: Iñaki Williams to register an assist.

The Athletic Bilbao winger's pace will be a handful, and his direct running could create chances for Ghana's central attackers.

Williams is more provider than finisher at international level, and an assist looks a solid play if Ghana are to break Panama down.

Our pick: Ismael Diaz to score anytime.

Panama's main goal threat had a productive qualifying campaign and carries the burden of expectation up front. If Panama are to nick a goal, as we suspect they might given Ghana's porous defence, Diaz is the man most likely to deliver it. Worth a look at longer odds for a consolation or equaliser.

Our pick: Jordan Ayew to score anytime.

With both Kudus and Partey missing from this squad, the experienced forward carries added responsibility in attack.

Ayew has been a reliable contributor at international level and could thrive in a central role with more of the creative burden falling on his shoulders. At generous odds, he represents solid value as an alternative goalscorer for the Black Stars.
