France vs Spain Prediction - World Cup Semi-Final

13/07/2026|SB Staff|World Cup 2026 Tips & Predictions

Two European heavyweights collide in the first World Cup Semi-final as France square off against Spain in what promises to be a mouth-watering clash.

Both nations arrive in red-hot form, with France having reeled off six straight wins for a so far perfect march through the tournament. While Spain have won five on the trot after a shock 0-0 draw to cult heroes Cabo Verde in their opening game.

France carry the firepower of Kylian Mbappe alongside Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise, while Spain lean on the wizardry of Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams and the finishing of Mikel Oyarzabal.

All eyes will be on the battle between former wonder-kid turned certified super star Mbappe and his heir apparent to the boy genius throne, Yamal. Something has to give when these attacking juggernauts meet, but who will blink first?

With a place in the final on the line, expect end-to-end action, plenty of chances, and a tactical chess match that could go the distance.

With so many questions, how about we go looking for some answers? Before we do though, to celebrate the momentous occasion that is the World Cup, Sportsbet is bringing back its exclusive Super Sub feature!

How does Super Sub work? Well, it’s very simple. Place a bet on select player markets throughout the Men’s World Cup and if that player is subbed off your bet rolls over to the new player that replaced them.

For example, if you’ve bet on Kylian Mbappe to score during this game and he fails to do so and is directly substituted for Jean-Philippe Mateta who ends up scoring instead, your original bet on Mbappe is paid as a winner!

Super Sub is not exclusive to goalscoring markets either, it also applies to anytime assist, player to win one or more fouls, shots on target and more, just make sure to read all the T&Cs before locking in your bet.

Now back to the action! For the latest betting tips and analysis ahead of this World Cup Semi-final, check out our France vs Spain tips and predictions below.

France vs Spain Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

*At the time of writing France are narrow favourites at 2.30, with Spain out to 3.25 and the draw sitting at 3.15.

It’s not hard to see why France are the more favoured of the two, Les Bleus have wrapped up six consecutive victories for a perfect record in North America and boast arguably the deepest forward line in the tournament.

With Kylian Mbappe leading a front three rounded out by Michael Olise and current Ballon D’or holder Ousmane Dembele, they can hurt any defence at any moment.

Don’t write off La Roja however, Spain were the pre-tournament favourites for a reason, and we expect them to dominate spells of possession through their patterned tiki-taka.

Ultimately though, France's transition speed and set-piece threat provide genuine value at the current price.

In a tight semi-final, backing the team with the sharper cutting edge and superior record feels like the smart play. Don’t be surprised if they need extra time or penalties to qualify for their third-straight World Cup Final, however.

Betting tip: France in Extra Time.

Correct Score Prediction

Correct score is always a tough market to accurately gauge. The odds suggest a low-scoring, cagey affair, with 1-1 at 6.00 the shortest-priced result overall. Among team-win scorelines, France 1-0 sits at 8.50 and shapes as the shortest realistic option.

However, big knockout games between elite European sides often descend into full-on firefights.

We don’t see any fresh linen here, so don’t go looking for a clean sheet. Yes, the game may start off cagey and careful, but the 'Both Teams to Score in the Second Half' market has hit in three of France's last four World Cup Knockout Stage matches against teams from the same region.

France in a five-goal extra time thriller anyone? It would be a scoreline fitting of this matchup, that’s for sure.

Betting tip: 3-2 France.

First Goal Prediction

There was only ever going to be one name being offered up here – Kylian Mbappe.

The French skipper is the standout name in the first goalscorer market at 3.75, and for good reason.

He has been electric throughout the tournament and enters this semi-final with eight goals so far to his name in North America.

These exploits have launched him up to second in the World Cup’s all-time scorers list with 20 goals, with only Argentina’s Lionel Messi currently ahead of him (heard of him?) on 21.

Mbappe’s pace against Spain's high defensive line looms as the tactical mismatch of the night, and any ball in behind gives him a real shot at breaking the deadlock.

La Roja’s Mikel Oyarzabal at 6.00 is next best and has impressed during this tournament, but Mbappe's role as central striker and penalty taker makes him the value pick to open the scoring.

Betting tip: Kylian Mbappe.
