Ronaldo Becomes First Player to Score at Six World Cups – The Three Points News Summary:

- Cristiano Ronaldo silenced his critics with a clinical brace as Portugal hammered Uzbekistan 5-0 in their World Cup Group K clash.

- Ronaldo becomes the first player in history to score at six World Cups, adding to his legacy as the game’s greatest goalscorer.

- Portugal move top of Group K and into pole position for the Round of 16, with a Miami showdown against Colombia still to come

Ronaldo silences the sceptics at the World Cup

After a flat showing in the opening 1-1 draw with DR Congo, the 41-year-old skipper was under the microscope.

His response? A near-post finish in the sixth minute from a Joao Cancelo cross — his first open-play goal at a major international tournament in five years.

He wasn't done. In the 39th minute, Bruno Fernandes slid a perfectly weighted pass through, and Ronaldo curled a low finish into the bottom corner to bring up his 10th career World Cup goal — one more than Portuguese great Eusebio. Not bad for a player some pundits had written off before kick-off.

The Selecao's second was pure cheek. Lining up a free-kick on the edge of the box with everyone expecting Ronaldo to shoot, the captain stood frozen as Nuno Mendes sprinted in and lashed a low strike past Nematov. Set-piece routine of the tournament so far? Hard to argue.

Portugal dictate terms as VAR denies Uzbekistan

Roberto Martinez's side dominated possession and tempo throughout, though Uzbekistan briefly threatened a way back.

In the 30th minute, Aziz Ganiev rifled a stunning effort into the top corner after Cancelo coughed up possession on the edge of his own box — only for VAR to chalk it off after spotting a foul by Abbosbek Fayzullayev in the build-up. Harsh, but the right call.

From there, the result was never in doubt. After half-time, another clever Portugal free-kick aimed at Ronaldo ended with the forward limping after a heavy collision with Nematov, before the resulting corner pinballed into the net — eventually credited as an own goal to the Uzbekistan keeper. 4-0, and breathing room aplenty.

The icing came in the 87th minute. Substitute Nelson Semedo's cross was meant for Ronaldo, who cleverly let it run for Rafael Leao to crash a thunderous first-time finish high into the net. Five-nil, statement made.

What it means for Group K

Portugal now sit top of Group K with four points, with one foot firmly in the knockout stage. Martinez, reportedly set to leave his post after the tournament regardless, will fancy his squad's chances of topping the group when they meet Colombia at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on Saturday.

For Uzbekistan, it's back-to-back defeats following their 3-1 loss to Colombia in the opener. Their World Cup debut now hangs by a thread, with a must-win clash against DR Congo at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta their final shot at survival.

As for Ronaldo? The five-time Ballon d'Or winner reminded everyone that, even at 41, writing him off remains the quickest way to make him score. Colombia have been warned.
